Living out online with OutMilitary.com

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

With the end of DADT, Gay servicemembers will soon be ready to communicate in a way never before possible.

Launched just over a month ago, www.OutMilitary.com is providing a supportive environment for 'friending,' sharing and networking between Gay active military, vets, and supporters.

After nearly two decades, Gay soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines can now 'ask yes, say yes' as they socially network as open Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual troops.

The social network (similar to Facebook) was launched one week after President Obama signed a new law overturning the ban on Gays in the U.S. military.

Within one month, the networking site has seen tremendous growth - proving that the estimated 1 million LGBT veterans and nearly 65,000 active-duty Gays really do exist. More than just a representation of numbers, OutMilitary.com gives these men and women a chance to network with each other and their supporters.

According to the creator and web designer of OutMilitary.com John McKinnon, many users joined the network after seeing an ad on Facebook.

Currently, the U.S. military is preparing rules to enforce the repeal, but a specific date for when that will take place has not been announced. Still, some soldiers say they will not wait and do not fear the possibility of losing their jobs.

McKinnon says he encourages people to join the social network, but does not encourage people who are currently serving on active duty or in the reserves to divulge personal information before the new rules come into effect.
