Penguins 4: Pedophile adds to the madness at St. Benedict's
by Miryam Gordon - SGN A&E Writer

Penguins 4
Annex Theatre
Through February 18

The serial church-ioso tales continue late night at Annex Theatre as Penguins 4 reveals St. Benedict's has its very own pedophile. No, this is not a news report! This intrepid reporter has investigated the goings-on at the Annex Theatre's invented (and hilariously inappropriate) St. Benedict's and found more mayhem, more mishaps, and more mishugas (Yiddish for craziness).

Playwright Scot Augustson continues to spin more improbable doings. Father Jones and Sister Bernadette fight for control while Sister Candy and elderly Connie Sullivan face unexpected pregnancies; Sisters Jenny Memphis and Mimi Coco finally give in to their inappropriate desires; and young Adam finds that his father is not his father (and who the Father has fathered) and discovers the mother he loves to love. Brother Placido goes in search of a relic penis that could bring thousands of dollars to the parish gift shop.

Like any good serial, the first moments are a recap of the first three episodes. You won't really know what happened in those episodes, but you'll get a taste of the inappropriate goings-on that you missed.

Daniel Christensen reappears as Father Luke, with Chris Dietz ever-present as Father Jones, Lisa Viertel gruffly commands as Sister Bernadette, Katie Driscoll portrays parentless Adam, Maggie Ferguson-Wagstaffe yearns as Sister Jenny Memphis, Karen Heaven hobbles as Bernadette's mother Connie Sullivan, Jenny Schmidt recovers as Sister Mimi Coco, Jillian Vashro sweetly sins as Sister Candy, and Clayton Weller mumbles as Brother Placido.

Director Bret Fetzer continues to orchestrate this madness, this time with excellent assist from choreographer Juliet Waller Pruzan, who gets to create 'if only' dance interludes with big laughs. Catch the silliness so you are ready for the next episode - the last chapter in this sordid tale - this summer.
