Jujubee comes to Seattle at R Place

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Jujubee
February 25-26
R Place

The wait is finally over, Seattle. Jujubee is on her way!

The drag queen reality television personality of RuPaul's Drag Race and RuPaul's Drag U fame will perform February 25-26 at R Place Seattle.

'This might make me seem like a geek, but I really want to visit the first Starbucks,' Jujubee told Seattle Gay News. 'I've never been to Seattle, but everyone tells me how beautiful the Emerald City is, so I can't wait!'

Jujubee rose to drag-stardom as a contestant in season two of RuPaul's Drag Race, where she proved that winning the top spot isn't everything; although Jujubee walked away as the second runner-up, she had earned the respect and admiration of viewers, easily joining her BFF, Raven, as the season's fan favorites.

'RuPaul jump-started the character of Jujubee,' she told SGN. 'Drag Race gave me a door to walk through and changed my life forever. The exposure from being on that show has allowed me to travel and perform for all my fans. I've gotten everything I wanted and more.'

Jujubee says that the on-air friendship between her and Raven was real. 'I love Raven,' she said. 'We are best friends. All of the season-two alumni still talk almost every day. We connect and tell each other about the good clubs to perform in, check up on one another, and gossip. It's a unique group of entertainers to be a part of.'

But enough about the other queens. Next Friday and Saturday, it's all about the queen bee - Jujubee, that is.

'I absolutely love performing in the clubs,' she said. 'My whole theory of drag is to tell a story and evoke emotion. When I am up there lip-syncing a song, I am telling a different story with my outfit and attitude. I'm not going to be doing cartwheels and dancing all crazy; that is not what Jujubee is about. I'm all about giving face and having fun.'

In the whirlwind year following her Drag Race debut, Jujubee has been from one end of the country to the other and back. 'I've just been having a really good time,' she said. 'I love playing Vegas and I am looking forward to performing in Miami soon. But Seattle has been on my list for awhile and I am excited for my debut next week!'

For Jujubee, drag is a way of life. 'I've always felt like drag allows me to show a side of me that doesn't exist when I'm out of drag,' she said. 'Jujubee is a great character. Maybe I'm crazy - and honey, I believe we are all a little crazy - but drag is my way of showing off my craziness.'

'At the end of the day,' she continued, 'Jujubee is a nice person just trying to make another dollar!'

Any good drag queen will tell you that in today's market it is important to keep up with current trends in music. Jujubee is no exception. 'I love the way that Rhianna is transforming,' she said. 'I just love her style. And I live for Niki Minaj - she is just life!' Seattle fans will get to see the Jujubee they know and love with a few new surprises sprinkled in here and there. 'I've been changing things up a little bit,' she said. 'I'm leaning more towards glamour these days and I want to try out being a blonde. If RuPaul can do it, then I can do it, too! Ru actually told me that.'

Jujubee has a message for all her Seattle fans waiting to see her R Place performance: 'We are going to have a lot of fun. I want you to dance around with me, lip-sync back at me, and be fierce. It is all about having a good time. Let's share an Absolut cocktail together.'
