Cricketer Steven Davies says he is Gay

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

International cricket player Steven Davies came out over the weekend making him the first active professional cricketer to announce he's Gay.

Davies says he has received nothing but support from his English colleagues and team bosses after he made the announcement.

'I'm comfortable with who I am, and happy to say who I am in public,' said Davies.

'I feel now is the right time to be open about my sexuality. Those close to me have known for a while and have been nothing but supportive and understanding,' he continued. 'I'd like to thank Surrey and the ECB, as well as the England players and coaching staff. They have all offered me their full backing from the moment I told them.'

Davies made his England debut in 2009 after first appearing for Worcestershire at the age of 18. Davies is a wicketkeeper-batsman for the county of Surrey and has played in 13 limited-overs internationals from England.

'My focus now is to play the best cricket I can for Surrey and get back into the England side,' said Davies. 'I am still the same person and I want to be remembered as a good cricketer, and as a Gay cricketer.'

It is rare for sportspeople to come out while still playing, and the closest precedent in cricket was Alan Hansford, a player with English county Sussex who admitted he was Gay after retiring in 1992.

Davies says he was inspired by the example of Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas, who revealed he was homosexual two years ago.

'It just showed me it can be done,' he said. 'He was brave enough to stand up and say who he was.'

'It was a very courageous thing to do,' he concluded, 'so if I can help anyone else like he helped me, then that would be great.'
