United Way helps to keep Chicken Soup Brigade's van rolling

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On March 29, the Lifelong AIDS Alliance Chicken Soup Brigade was announced as a United Way of King County recipient of the 2011 Hunger Relief Capacity Program.

'Over 1,000 sick and vulnerable people count on the Chicken Soup Brigade for meals and groceries each week - but the nonprofit's old van keeps breaking down,' United Way of King County posted on their website www.uwkc.org. 'Through our 'Why the Fork?' campaign - which is running through April 14 - we're raising the funds this amazing nonprofit needs to purchase a reliable new van.'

Lifelong's Chicken Soup Brigade is a leader in improving the nutritional status of people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses in Seattle/King County.

Each week, the Chicken Soup Brigade feed hundreds of people with bags of groceries and individualized meals prepared in their fully equipped commercial kitchen. The meals are an important part of maintaining the health of people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses.

According to Lifelong officials, clients also receive medical nutrition therapy from registered dietitians to help improve their nutritional health and minimize symptoms. Dietary preferences, religious and cultural observations, and medical conditions are all considered when matching a person with the most beneficial services.

With funds raised through the 'Why The Fork?' campaign, the new van will help volunteers:

o Drive more than 80 routes throughout King County

o Deliver up to 1,000 bags of nutritious groceries and 3,000 healthy meals

o Serve over 1,000 people each week

o Collect food given by shoppers at local grocery stores as part of Chicken Soup's Care to Shop program

Through April 14, every dollar you donate will be doubled by the 'Why The Fork?' campaign. To donate, please visit www.uwkc.org.
