A Dyke About Town: Maceo Parker funkifies Jazz Alley

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Maceo Parker
Cuteness was sick at home, so Mercy took her friend Reality to see Maceo Parker at Jazz Alley on April 22. Parker's sax was luscious and his voice was powerful. Dennis Rollins played out-there trombone. Ron Tooley's trumpet was sensational. Will Boulware's piano was rocking. The guitar by Bruno Speight was phenomenal. Rodney "Skeet" Curtis played a knowing bass. Corey Parker had a strong voice. Martha High was a knockout.

Maceo was coy, not introducing the amazing drummer until the end of the set. When Parker had played sax with James Brown, his brother, Melvin, played drums with the band. His drummer is his brother's son, Marcus Parker.

Cuteness inspired Mercy to do some research on Maceo's age, pointing out that he must be pushing 70. The sax player is 68 and amazingly energetic.

"A Donde Fiesta," featuring upbeat keyboards and trombone, started the second show. "This Funk Is on the Hoof" continued the pace with solos by Boulware and Curtis. "Make it Funky" focused on trombone and trumpet. "Make it So" followed nicely with guitar.

Martha High also sang with James Brown. She nailed "It Takes Two to Tango." Reality thought the trombone solo, "If I Fall in Love," was an incredibly soulful interlude, the sweetest rendition he's ever heard. "Who needs dessert after that?" he asked.

For "Doing it to Death," Parker switched to a delicious flute. Guitar and trombone also soloed. Corey Parker sang lead nicely for "Watcha Know About Funk." It also featured guitar and trombone and a fabulous drum solo. People got up and danced.

Maceo came out for his encore wearing sunglasses. "You Don't Know Me" was his wonderful tribute to Ray Charles. He showed he can do slow and beautiful, too. Solos by Speight, Curtis, and Boulware were the focus of "Funky Way."

River Walker
Mercy's new favorite Seattle Lesbian writer is Cate Culpepper, because she found Culpepper's novel River Walker a delightful read. Grady Wrenn is an anthropology professor with a very sad past. Elena Montalvo is a curandera who wants Grady to help her confront a deadly ghost. The New Mexico setting is well detailed, as well as the minor characters. Sex scenes delight.

Lea DeLaria at Triple Door
Mercy and Cuteness are looking forward to seeing Lea DeLaria at the Triple Door on May 7. DeLaria is a comedian, actress, and jazz musician. She has performed stand-up comedy for over 25 years and is a prominent figure in the world of Lesbian stand-up comedy. Lea will be playing with a trio. DeLaria was the first openly Gay comic to break the late-night talk-show barrier with her 1993 appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show. In December of 1993, she also hosted Comedy Central's Out There, the first all-Gay stand-up comedy special.

You can get your tickets at thetripledoor.net.
