Pinetop Perkins: A tribute to a legend

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Pinetop Perkins
Tribute

Mercy and Cuteness were knocked out by the performances at Jazz Alley's Pinetop Perkins tribute on April 26. Willie 'Big Mouth' Smith, who won a Grammy for Joined at the Hip, his collaboration with Perkins, said he was grateful to the pioneers who came before him for keeping the music alive.

Smith's band was tight. Jimmi Mayes, the drummer, opened by singing 'Chicago Blues' with a nice voice. Frank Krakowski had a strong voice when he sang 'Everything I Do.' His guitar work was amazing. Robert Stroger's bass was rocking. Krakowski also sang the B.B. King song 'The Thrill Is Gone.'

Smith's voice was powerful and his harmonica was phenomenal. 'I Like to Hear You Call My Name' was slow and bluesy and featured guitar and harmonica. 'I Work Hard Every Day' stayed slow and featured Willie and Frank. 'Higher Cooking' was upbeat and featured harmonica and guitar.

Hubert Sumlin's voice was soulful, and his guitar was knowing. 'I'm Sitting on Top of the World' featured his guitar and Smith's harmonica and was slow and funky. 'Baby Come Back to Me' was fast-paced and focused on Hubert's guitar and Willie's harmonica. Those instruments were also featured in 'I Did What I Could For You, Baby.' There was a standing ovation for Sumlin at the end of his part of the concert.

'I'm Just Your Fool' returned to the upbeat with Smith's voice and harmonica. 'Last Night I Lost the Best Friend I Ever Had' was slow and sad and reminded us of Pinetop. Solos by Krakowski and Smith were the focus of the fast-paced 'You Got to Cut That Out.' 'Hold My Hand' was slow and moving. It featured Willie and Frank. 'I Was Born in Arkansas' focused on Smith and Krakowski. 'I'm a Creeper' ended the evening fast and featured Willie and Frank. There was a standing ovation that Mercy and Cuteness joined, even though they are disabled.

HD Broadcast of
Met Peformance of
Il Trovatore

Mercy and Cuteness and the gang loved the HD broadcast of the Met's Il Trovatore. Mercy found the staging set in the Civil War effective. Cuteness thought the singing and acting by Sondra Radvanovsky, Dolora Zajick, Marcelo Alvarez, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the principal roles incredible. She can't understand why opera females such as Leonora expect their males to forgive them for buying the men's freedom with their bodies. 'Why are they surprised when they are rejected for it?' she asked. Assonance has decided to forgive Il Trovatore for its unbelievable plot because the music is so gorgeous.
