Video asks, 'Haven't they waited long enough?'

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

While it may be true that patience is a virtue, in the case of New York residents Richard Adrian Dorr, 83, and John Mace, 91, both time and patience may be running out.

The Gay couple, who have been together for an astonishing 61 years, still cannot get married.

On May 3, Freedom to Marry released a video, Richard and John - Haven't They Waited Long Enough?, which tells the story of their decades-long relationship and how, after all these years, the two men are still waiting for the freedom to marry.

'Richard and John are the quintessential New York couple. They met at Julliard [School of Music] and have spent most of their lives together here,' said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry. 'They are still obviously so deeply in love after 61 years, yet after all those years of commitment, being there for one another through the ups and down of life, they are still denied the one thing they want most: the freedom to marry in New York. It is time to change that. After 61 years together, haven't they waited long enough?'

The two men met at Julliard in 1948 and have been a couple since 1950. Both are voice teachers who live and work in Manhattan. Over the years, they have taught students including Bette Midler, Vanessa Redgrave, and the late Natasha Richardson.

'We've thought about doing something up in Massachusetts or Connecticut, but we've always been New Yorkers & everything has been New York,' says Dorr in the video. 'We're New Yorkers, and after 61 years of togetherness, we feel we have a right to be married in New York.'

The video is part of an aggressive online advertising campaign aimed at garnering support for the freedom for same-sex couples to marry in New York.

The video, available on the Freedom to Marry website (freedomtomarry.org), was produced and directed by Sako Brockmann of Sideways8Media.
