kd lang to appear at Woodland Park Zoo |
Our favorite Lesbian chanteusse from Canada - unless you know something about Avril Lavigne I don't - is returning to Seattle for a one-night performance at Woodland Park Zoo. kd lang is set to appear August 10 at the park, as part of the ZooTunes summer concert series. The Grammy-winning artist released a stellar new album last month, Sing It Loud, with ten songs backed entirely by her own band for the first time since two earlier recordings with the Reclines, 1987's Angel with a Lariat and 1989's Absolute Torch and Twang. The CD, recorded in Nashville, features a delicate cover of the Talking Heads' "Heaven" and the leadoff single "I Confess". lang will almost certainly introduce tracks from it at the zoo with her ensemble Siss Boom Bang. Tickets, priced at $35, are now on sale at the Woodland Park Zoo gates or online at www.zoo.org.
Speaking of ZooTunes, here's how the rest of the lineup shakes out: Taj Mahal and Joan Osborne (June 22), Marc Cohn and Mary Chapin Carpenter (June 26), Lucinda Williams (June 29), The Robert Cray Band (June 30), Afrocubism (July 6), Indigo Girls with Mount Moriah (July 20-21), Brandi Carlile (July 29), The Go-Go's (August 14), Carolina Chocolate Drops/The Be Good Tanyas (August 17), and Aimee Mann with The Weepies (August 21).
Slightly off track, but still revelant to music, Tulalip Resort Casino - which has fabulous guest rooms, by the way - is hosting its sixth annual "Awesome 80s Prom" this Memorial Day Weekend. Like, totally. We're talking big shoulderpads. cockatoo bangs, glittery gloves, duck shoes, and skinny ties, not to mention oldies but yummies from Madonna, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Flock of Seagulls, Whitney Houston, Rick Springfield, and if we're lucky, lots of New Order. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, are $30 advance and $40 at the door, while admission for Sunday, May 29 is $20 advance and $30 at the door. Tulalip Resort Casino is a 30 to 40-minute drive from downtown Seattle, just past Everett. For more information, visit www.Awesome80sProm.com.
What are the Gayest songs you've ever heard in your life? Maybe the same ones we have. On June 24, the music team at Seattle Gay News will reveal our own list of the campiest, fruitiest, most flamboyant, and perhaps butchest, songs that we've ever listened to. And yes, Justin Bieber's "Baby" is already on mine.
You snooze, you lose. The following shows are now sold out: The Kills on May 9 (The Showbox Market), The Cars on May 10 (The Showbox SoDo), Lykke Li on May 26 (The Showbox Market), and Adele on June 1 (Paramount Theatre).
Finally, support our local music scene by picking up or downloading a copy of the new Fleet Foxes album, Helplessness Blues - if not for you, then for an older brother's birthday or a hipster nephew's graduation. It'll likely appear on several year-end critics' list, and it was written and recorded right here in Seattle.
