Sisters giving out money, soliciting grant applications

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, The Abbey of St. Joan, want to give you money! On May 16, the Sisters announced they are opening the coffers they have been steadily filling the past 12 months and are now accepting applications for their 2011 Charity Granting Cycle.

For the last several years, the Sisters have been giving out grants annually to non-profit 501(c)3 organizations in Washington state. The organizations that have qualified for grants in the past have all been supportive of the LGBT community in some way, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS services, STD prevention, LGBT veterans, youth support, and marriage equality.

According to the Sisters, since their grant program was started, the Abbey has given away thousands of dollars to help support the community.

'Check out our website (www.theabbey.org) to find a link to our 'Charity Grant Fund' on the 'Sunday School' page. By following that link, you will find the application for downloading and printing, plus instructions on filling it out so that you give us the information we need to make a thoughtful and informed decision (no bribes, please, no matter how sparkly),' said the Sisters in a press release. 'You can also reach the application/instructions directly by typing www.theabbey.org/projects/grants.html into your web browser.'

If you have questions about the application process, the Sisters will be available to answer questions on May 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the 15th Avenue Coffee & Tea Starbucks (328 15th Ave. E. on Seattle's Capitol Hill).

'We encourage you to get your thorough and concise application in ASAP, because it must reach the Abbey no later than June 29 to be considered,' they said. 'This will give us enough time to review each one before we distribute the monies at our anniversary party in July. Stay tuned for party details.'

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, The Abbey of St. Joan are 'an order of 21st-century nuns dedicated to the promulgation of universal joy and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. We work to raise money for AIDS charities, fight for Queer rights and visibility, do safer sex outreach, and strive diligently to never take ourselves so seriously that we forget to have fun. We gladly welcome all races, creeds, genders, and sexual orientations.'
