Paul Van Dyk interview coming, Pride heats up

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

How do you say 'hot DJ' in German? Paul Van Dyk. Regarded as one of the ten best DJs in the entire world by numerous polls and publications and a favorite amongst electronic music fans from Beirut to Mexico City, this guy can fill a room anywhere, anytime. The Grammy-nominated artist is close to unveiling his newest work of house-trance cuts, Evolution, and has joined forces with noted stage designer PvD to create a unique live experience that he's currently touring in select cities. PvD previously worked with Kanye West and Muse. Seattle is on the short list of cities that will welcome Van Dyk's 'Evolution Tour 2011' to The Showbox SoDo on June 10. But before he does that, he's talking with me here in The Music Lounge. Reached in Europe this week by phone, the interview with Paul Van Dyk will print in next week's issue, June 3. Visit www.showboxonline.com for concert tickets.

An interview with award-winning composer Duncan Sheik will also be featured in the coming weeks. No stranger to Seattle Gay News (he's interviewed with us twice before), he won Tony and Grammy accolades for co-creating the Broadway hit musical Spring Awakening. Sheik is set to play at The Triple Door on June 26, where he'll perform songs from his latest album, Covers '80s, a collection of tunes from that decade with a personal spin, including Tears for Fears' 'Shout,' Howard Jones' 'What Is Love,' and Depeche Mode's 'Stripped.' Likely, he'll play his own material, such as 'Barely Breathing,' 'On a High,' and 'Start Again' - fingers crossed for 'Serena.' Sheik is one of the artists who will appear in our special Pride Music issue on June 24, so you can read it while swigging mimosas just before the parade. Visit www.thetripledoor.net for tickets to Sheik's performance.

Here's another interview to add to our Pride Music issue next month: Augustana lead singer Dan Layus will be speaking with me before or on the day of the band's Seattle performance on June 11 at The Showbox Market. The San Diego-based group is widely known for their hit singles 'Sweet and Low' and 'Boston.' Look for Layus' interview on June 24, and visit www.showboxonline.com for tickets to Augustana's concert with The Maine.

Deadmau5 fans, re-congregate. The young (and cute, when unmasked) DJ will return to the Paramount Theatre on August 18 for a live performance. If it's anything like last year's show at the same venue, then get ready to lose your mind - and your baby fat. Tickets, priced at $50, are available now at www.stgpresents.org. Deadmau5 usually doesn't give interviews, but I'll try to work my magic and see if I can get him in The Music Lounge before his appearance.

You snooze, you lose. The following concerts are sold out: Adele on June 1 (Paramount Theatre), Chelsea Handler on June 25 (Paramount Theatre), Sarah McLachlan and Friends on July 19 (Chateau Ste. Michelle), and Brandi Carlile on July 29 (Woodland Park Zoo). A second show has been added for Sarah McLachlan and Friends on July 20.

Finally, I'm headed to the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco this summer. The three-day event in August includes Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, MGMT, Muse, Deadmau5, Big Boi, Erykah Badu, Arctic Monkeys, The Shins, Girl Talk, and a reunited Phish playing two sets. Join me there, or look for special coverage of the festival in the Seattle Gay News in mid-August.
