A Dyke About Town: Rachelle Ferrell phenomenal at Jazz Alley

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Rachelle Ferrell
Cuteness turned Mercy on to Rachelle Ferrell and Mercy was happy she had gone to the May 19 performance at Jazz Alley. Cuteness had been right that Ferrell had an amazing voice. 'I love it when she goes into her low register,' she said. Mercy was also impressed with Rachelle's open and friendly face.

The evening started with an original, 'Satisfied,' featuring Brandon Coleman's delicious keyboards. Ferrell said, 'The funk is in the house.' Mercy agreed. Raymond McKinley's bass was soulful in 'Sister.' 'Love Me Like You're Losing Me' continued nicely. 'I Can Explain' was a fine original. Piano was also the focus on the standard, 'My Funny Valentine.' It gave Mercy a chuckle of contentment and earned a bravo from a man in the audience.

Rachelle said, 'After 10-plus years, I'm finally returning to the recording studio.' This made Mercy happy. 'Love Is in the Air' was a pleasing song written by Ferrell's guitarist, Billy Odum, and featured more keyboards. 'I'm Feeling Sentimental Tonight' was a sweet original to close with. The crowd gave her a standing ovation.

Corella Ballet
Mercy and Cuteness very much enjoyed the Spanish troupe, Corella Ballet, at UW's World Dance Series on May 20. Cuteness pointed out that the concert covered a nice range of dances, from classical to modern. She thought the lighting was good, including silhouettes for one dance and a patterned floor for another.

The opening number, 'Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1,' choreographed by Clark Tippet, showed their classical chops nicely. 'For 4,' set to music by Schubert and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, allowed four male dancers to show off their athleticism and fast turns.

'Solea,' choreographed by Maria Pages and set to music by Ruben Lebaniegos, earned a standing ovation that Mercy and Cuteness joined even though they are disabled. As Cuteness said, 'It was a brilliant combination of flamenco and ballet set to a beautiful vibrant piece.'

Mercy found the industrial set and music for the final dance, 'DGV: Danse a Grande Vitesse' a pleasing contrast to the rest of the evening. Christopher Wheeldon also choreographed that one. Cuteness pointed out that the composer, Michael Nyman, also wrote the score for the movie, The Piano. The evening ended with another standing ovation.

Allen Toussaint
Cuteness also turned Mercy on to Allen Toussaint, so Mercy is looking forward to seeing him at Jazz Alley. Toussaint is an America musician, composer, record producer, and influential figure in New Orleans R&B. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Many of Toussaint's songs have become familiar through numerous cover versions, including 'Working in the Coalmine,' 'Ride Your Pony,' 'Fortune Teller,' 'Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues),' 'Get Out of My Life, Woman,' 'Southern Nights,' 'Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky,' 'I'll Take a Melody,' and 'Mother-in-Law.'

He will be there May 31 through June 1. You can get your tickets at jazzalley.com.

Jennie McNulty
L.A. comic Jennie McNulty joins Seattle singer/comedian Lisa Koch and her comic pal Peggy Platt for a night of Queer comedy and twisted tunes on June 5 at 7:30 pm at Theatre Off Jackson. Recently rated among the Top 10 Lesbian Comics by Curve magazine, Jennie can currently be seen on MTV Network's LOGO channel in the comedy special 'One Night Stand-Up.'

You can get your tickets at theatreoffjackson.org.
