18th Annual Dining Out for Life a huge success

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Nearly one month ago, Seattleites went to their favorite restaurants to 'Dine Out For Life' in support of Lifelong AIDS Alliance on April 28. The event, says Lifelong officials, was a resounding success.

'With your help, we were able to visibly demonstrate support and raise money for those living with HIV/AIDS in our community,' said officials. 'Diner donations that day totaled almost $60,000! This combined with the restaurant donations will enable our clients to continue to receive the many services provided by Lifelong AIDS Alliance.'

The organization says they look forward to dining with you next year on April 26, 2012. In addition, if you have a favorite restaurant you'd like to see participate next year, send Lifelong their name and the organization will ask them to join next year's list of participating locations.

Some of the money raised by the Dining Out For Life fundraiser will go to Lifelong's Chicken Soup Brigade (CSB). Diane Carmel, the new executive chef for CSB, recently spoke with media about the impact the program has on those it serves.

Diane spent three years as a cook for Lifelong's Chicken Soup Brigade before becoming the meal program manager at Pike Market Senior Center. While at the Center, she was able to make a significant impact on its ability to better serve seniors with nutritious and delicious food. Diane came back to Lifelong and says she is ready to build on the excellent, outcome-based nutrition program that is CSB's hallmark.

'I have always had a great love of the agency mission and their commitment to provide high quality, healthy meals to people who could not normally access them,' she said about her return to CSB. 'The program has drastically increased the number of meals that we produce for clients each week yet the staff numbers haven't changed. It's a testament to how much you can accomplish when you are passionate about the people you serve.'

Diane says she is interested in working more directly with local farms to increase the amount of new dishes that use seasonal produce.

'It's a great opportunity to get creative and support our community,' she said. 'We are also sending a survey to all CSB clients to get their input on the recipes and their meal preferences. This allows us to continue to improve the quality of our food and service.'

Lifelong AIDS Alliance is committed to preventing the spread of HIV, and to providing practical support services and advocating for those whose lives are affected by HIV and AIDS. LLAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For more information about the organization visit them online at www.LLAA.org.
