Reel Queer Youth accepting applications

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Reel Queer Youth, now in its third year, is a filmmaking workshop for LGBTQ youth and their allies. Three Dollar Bill Cinema, producer of the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and Reel Queer Youth, is proud to announce that applications are being accepted now for this year's Reel Queer Youth program.

The week-long workshop will be held July 18-22. According to officials, participants will use professional cameras and editing equipment to create a short film along with a team of professional filmmakers and mentors in a safe, open, and fun environment.

In addition, discussions examining media representations of LGBTQ people will be included.

'It's exciting to see how this program has expanded,' said Jason Plourde, programming director for Three Dollar Bill Cinema. 'This year, we have a mentor and youth participants coming from California, thanks to the Bay Area Video Coalition and from all over Washington state. With such diverse participants and inspiring mentors, I can't wait to see the films they create.'

Through a partnership with Reel Grrls, the workshops and training will be held in Seattle's Central District from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

A 'Friends and Family' screening of the completed works will be held on the afternoon of July 23.

Reid Kuennen, program manager for Reel Queer Youth, underscored the importance of the program. 'This is the program I wish I had when I was young. Our media environment is severely lacking in positive representations of Queer people and their communities.'

Applications can be filled out online at www.threedollarbillcinema.org/programs/RQY. The application deadline is June 30.
