Pride Idol's week 10 a disco inferno

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Pride Idol Disco Night marked the last night of regular competition in the local singing contest that has made stars, gifted cash, and brought a community together through Pride and music!

Pride Idol is a citywide singing contest produced and presented by SO&P, Verizon Wireless, FUZE, Seattle's Best Karaoke, and Seattle Gay News every Sunday night at Neighbours Nightclub (1509 Broadway) and hosted by Gaysha Starr. Doors open at 6 p.m., when contestants can sign up to sing in the 7 p.m. competition. The grand finale is scheduled for June 19, where a winner will be chosen as Seattle's 2011 Pride Idol!

Sister Domine Trix (with hair big enough to have its own gravitational pull) made her return as she joined Kitty Kitty Bang Bang and me as we picked the last two people who would advance to the Wildcard and Finale. Disco Night was a blast!

Contestant number one, Angela, returned from last week's show to give it another go. Her first song, 'Last Dance,' went over well as it kept in step with the disco theme. But it was her version of Pat Benatar's 'Shadow of the Night' that pushed her into the first place slot. Angela was ultimately advanced to the June 19 finale. Good luck, diva!

Contestant number two we've seen before & as Sister VixXxen of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence The Abbey of St. Joan. This time, she was there as a he: Marcos. Winning over the judges and the audience with costume changes and charm, Marcos sang Elton John's 'Sad Songs Say So Much' and 'Mamma I'm Coming Home' (he cleverly changed the lyrics from 'mamma' to 'daddy') to advance to the Wildcard round!

Pride Idol favorite Thomas returned to do what he does best: country western and ballads. Although he veered from the theme, it is always a pleasure to hear Thomas sing. He did well on Brooks & Dunn's 'Believe' and Michael Buble's 'Home.' Thomas also returns next week to sing at the Wildcard round.

Newcomer Tyler was a good sport. Dressed the part and full of energy, he sang Gloria Estefan's 'Everlasting Love' and Billy Joel's 'Only the Good Die Young.' Although Tyler did not advance, he was fun, and we love that at Pride Idol!

Contestant number five, Stanly, was the crowd favorite of the night. Maybe it was because of his chiseled body (he was a dead ringer for Lenny Kravitz), great smile, and sexy voice, or maybe it was because he was brave enough to don an afro wig and strip down his shirt. Either way, Stanly made some fans Sunday night as he sang Rob Thomas' 'This Is How a Heart Breaks' and Amy Winehouse's 'Rehab.'

There are only two nights left!

June 12: Wildcard

June 19: Pride Idol Finale

This year's Grand Finale prize package is very attractive: $300 will go to the third place winner, $500 to second place, and first prize is $1,000 and a Verizon Wireless phone with two round-trip tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada aboard Delta airlines (courtesy of Orbitz), and a chance to perform aboard the SO&P float during the Seattle Pride Parade, June 26.

Come out and sing! Show us what you've got and become Seattle's next Pride Idol!
