Kristine W stars again at Neighbours

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Kristine W, the undisputed queen of dance/club music, returns to Seattle September 3, when she will light up the night with her 16th number-one track on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart, 'Fade,' at Neighbours Seattle. Kristine W's appearance live appearance is part of a weeklong celebration commemorating Neighbours Seattle's 29th anniversary as one of Seattle's - and the LGBT community's - premiere dance clubs.

Kristine W - an international dance music icon since the late '90s - told Seattle Gay News that she can't wait to return to Neighbours and the Emerald City, going so far as to say that Seattle is 'one of the greatest cities in the U.S.'

'The first time I performed at Neighbours there was such a sense of community and fun that I knew I was hooked and would be back,' she said.

The dance diva has performed at the club a number of times, including headlining their 2010 Pride week celebration.

'The nightclub business is very tough, and I think Neighbours is so successful because they always evolve,' Kristine W told SGN, 'but they have a formula that works, too. From the staff to the DJs to the drag queens and recording artists they support, the management and owners do expect you to bring your A-game & so you have to bring it!'

Kristine W is no stranger to success. Her last studio album was a venture into a new genre as she released Straight Up With a Twist, an extraordinarily ambitious, four-years-in-the-making, two-CD, 30-tracks album that marked her contemporary jazz debut. But it is the incredible success she has enjoyed for many years in the dance world that amazes fans and silences critics. Kristine W currently holds the world record for most consecutive #1 Billboard club hits with nine; Madonna and Janet Jackson each had seven in a row. She recently tied Mariah Carey for third-most chart-toppers on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart - only Madonna (with 40) and Janet (19) have scored more at the pole position. In December 2009, Billboard published both their Year End and Decade End charts announcing Kristine in the third-place position on the Decade's Best of 2000s Dance Club Play Artists list, trailing only Madonna and Beyoncé.

Kristine W has local ties, as well; she grew up in the Tri-Cities and used to visit Seattle as a girl. At one point in her life she was crowned Miss Washington, going on the win to talent and swimsuit competitions in the Miss America Pageant.

'I just had my 16th number-one dance single with my latest release, FAME,' said Kristine W. 'We are working on a number-ones album. There's a lot going on for sure.'

She said she listens to Luther Vandross for vocal inspiration, but lately has been drawn to the Cee Lo Green album.

There is one group of men - Gay men - who have a special place in her heart. 'I love my Gay fans,' she said. 'I am so thankful to have them in my musical family. I always look forward to shows at Neighbours so I can hang out with the Gay boys afterward.'

At the end of the day, Kristine W says she loves being an entertainer and is 'honored to be viewed as the queen of dance.'

Kristine W promises that her September 3 performance will be a show you won't want to miss. 'I tried to put as many of the hits into a 30-minute show that I could,' she said. 'But if I don't do one of your favorites, yell it out when I stop to chat with you, and I will break into it a cappella.'

'I aim to please,' she said with a smile. 'Love you!'
