Gay actor Neil Patrick Harris gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored openly Gay actor Neil Patrick Harris on September 15 with his first star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

David Burtka, his longtime love, joined the star at the unveiling of the star.

'As much of an honor as this is, unfortunately, it won't be the first time I've been plastered on the sidewalk in front of the Frolic Room,' the two-time Emmy winner joked, noting his star's placement near a dive bar and the Pantages Theater. 'And yes, that includes right now.'

'Right now, my twins, Gideon and Harper, are too young to understand this honor,' he added. 'They spend most of their time peeing and vomiting on me. But let's be honest, that's probably what's going to happen nightly to my star here outside the Frolic Room. But someday, when they're older, I'll take them here, my heart bursting with pride, and say, 'Kids, your old man was the 587th Hollywood star in the Television category.' And God, that sounds good!'

Equally successful on stage and screen, Neil Patrick Harris, 38, continues to demonstrate his creative versatility. He can currently be seen as the womanizing Barney Stinson on the hit CBS comedy series How I Met Your Mother, a role which has garnered him four Emmy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, a People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor, and a Critics' Choice Award for Supporting Actor in a Comedy.

In 2010, Neil won his first two Emmy Awards for his guest-starring turn on the critically acclaimed series Glee, and his role as host of the 63rd Annual Tony Awards. In addition to hosting the 2009 Tonys, Harris also served as host and producer of both the 65th Annual Tony Awards and the 61st Annual Primetime Emmys. Named one of the '2008 Entertainers of the Year' by Entertainment Weekly, Neil was included in Time Magazine's 2010 Time 100 List, an annual list of the world's leading thinkers, leaders, artists, and heroes.

Harris gained notoriety on the small screen as the much-adored title character in Doogie Howser, M.D., a role which also garnered him a Golden Globe nomination.

A veteran of the theater, Harris recently tackled the leading role of Bobby in the New York Philharmonic's concert production of Stephen Sondheim's Company at Lincoln Center. Harris has starred in three Broadway productions, including the dual role of The Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in the Tony Award-winning musical Assassins. He made his Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winning production of Proof, and later starred as the exuberant M.C. in Cabaret at Studio 54.

Harris rounds out his accomplishments on stage and television with an equal measure of success on the silver screen. He was recently seen in two feature films - the independent comedy The Best & The Brightest, and the animation/live-action adaptation of the beloved cartoon series The Smurfs. Harris recently starred in CBS Films' Beastly, a modern-day retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast, based on the novel by Alex Flinn, and co-starring Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, and Mary-Kate Olsen. He will soon be seen in the highly anticipated third installment of the Harold & Kumar film series, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.
