Delta Sky Club at Sea-Tac Airport gets cool makeover

By: Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

It needed it. It got it. And it looks incredible.

Delta Airlines' newly renovated and relocated Sky Club lounge, now on the second level of the S Terminal, is a huge improvement in comparison to its smaller and frumpy former quarters, initially belonging to Northwest Airlines.

In a city where many Delta SkyMiles medallion members reside, not to mention thousands of Alaska Airlines mileage tier members who receive some of Delta's benefits, a brand new Sky Club lounge at Sea-Tac Airport adds an incentive to arriving early for your flight.

Adjacent to British Airways' VIP lounge, Delta's Sky Club is even larger than its next door neighbor. Upon check-in, what's immediately noticeable is the slick bar counter with a glistening assortment of premium liqueurs and wines just waiting to be popped open by a bartender, dressed sharply in black slacks and matching long-sleeve shirt. Above are two mounted TV screens, showing Departures and Arrivals updates for today's flights. Below, coolers that keep beer, champagne, soft drinks, juices, and other beverages nicely chilled.

All beverages and light snacks (honey mustard pretzels, crackers, hummus, baked cookies, trail mix) are complimentary in the lounge. A self-serve espresso machine is also available and chilled water can be found at the bar counter.

Throughout the space, individual Persian blue-colored cubes are everywhere and each has its own slideout tray. These are perfect for fliers who want some privacy, closing off the possibility of fellow travelers leaning in to mingle. But for those wanting to socialize, or those traveling in pairs or groups, there are comfy armchairs set up all around in pods of four or more, aside from coffee tables and elevated counters with high chairs, that create good congregating areas.

Two well-applauded additions to this new Sky Club are the "Quiet Room" tucked away in a back corner, allowing travelers to read, relax or unwind without the threat of being interrupted by cell phone talkers and random chit chatters. Another new feature is hardwire computer stations for those traveling without laptops and needing to send a few emails before boarding their flights. Showers in each of the men's and women's restrooms with bath supplies, as well as complimentary copies of current magazines, enhance the experience even more.

Access to Delta's Sky Club lounge, in Seattle or any of their domestic or international locations, is obviously extended to passengers who've purchased or have been upgraded to business and first class cabins. However, one day passes are available at www.delta.com for $50 to the general public. So long as your travel takes place on the same day, you can use your pass at multiple airports, as I did in Seattle and Miami recently. In New York's JFK Airport, my pass was accepted at The Oasis in Terminal 4, a lounge shared by Delta, Egyptian, Kuwait, KLM, and various other airlines. At Sea-Tac, you can freely roam from the S Terminal to all other terminals without having to re-queue security lines, making it easy to fly any airline and still use your Sky Club pass.

For seasoned travelers or those wanting to sweeten their vacation itinerary, a stop at the new Delta Sky Club in Seattle is a great way to kick off before take off.
