Danny Vega - Seattle Gay man beaten into coma by teens

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Early last week, well-known Filipino hairdresser Danny Vega, 58, was beaten into a coma. Vega, an openly Gay man who has been running a successful shop in south Seattle for 30 years, is now on life support. Police are looking for members of the community to come forward with any information about the attack.

According to police, it was about 7:45 p.m. on November 15 when the Rainier Valley man was attacked and robbed in the 4200 block of South Othello Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Vega, who was able to tell family members few details before slipping into a coma, said three teens attacked him and that he lost consciousness during the attack. The teens also took his cell phone and housekeys.

'He said that they just kept beating him and that he was unconscious for 30 to 45 minutes,' Vega's niece, Melanie, told King 5 News.

After the beating, Vega told his family, he woke up and walked home, where he called police.

Seattle Fire Department responded and treated the victim before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The family is taking turns praying at Vega's bedside, hoping for a miracle. 'Whoever saw this happen please, please call 911, because it's so hurtful. Just please call if you seen what happened,' said Melanie.

Vega's family believes he was beaten because he is openly Gay. Police say that due to lack of evidence, they are not investigating the assault and robbery as a hate crime.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Seattle Police Homicide and Assault unit at (206) 233-5000. Anonymous calls are welcome. An account has been set up for Vega at Wells Fargo Bank.
