Jackie Beat is Christmas in The Nutcracker

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

I love Jackie Beat. And I love that Jackie Beat has become the incredible shrinking drag queen (seriously, have you seen her lately? She looks fabulous!). But, try as I may, I've never thought about Jackie Beat and Christmas at the same time.

For this reason alone, I knew I had to catch her latest show, Jackie Beat: The Nutcracker, at Re-bar (1114 Howell St.) December 7 to see what all the fuss is about. Well, SGN reader, I gotta tell you, the fuss and hype is laughter and hilarity. Jackie Beat is Christmas (and Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Ramadan & no holiday was safe!) in the sense that sometimes, this time of year, we all need a good laugh and a stiff drink. On Wednesday at the Jackie Beat show, I had both & in abundance.

Seattle audiences (and this reviewer) are no strangers to Miss crazy-as-a-shithouse-rat Jackie Beat. She is a guarantee. JB can sing (not dance & at all!), deliver a joke, and banter with the audience with the best of them. For over 20 years she's wowed, offended, and just plain shocked audiences nationally, but it wasn't until 1998 that her annual holiday tradition was born.

Some of JB's holiday shows include How the Bitch Stole Christmas, Give 'Til it Hurts, Alcoholidays, Blew Christmas, Drag Nog, and this year's hilarious The Nutcracker.

Dressed from head to toe in what looked like a red sequin pantsuit a la Hilary Clinton and BIG hair, Jackie Beat wasted no time letting the audience at Re-bar know what we were in for. Songs like 'Jackie Beat is Coming to Town,' 'Jew Christmas,' and 'It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Syphilis' were well received, as was 'Santa's Baby' - the pregnancy confessional. JB's holiday show is not for the faint of heart, which is why she's become such an icon in the world of drag where, as Jackie herself says, 'Queens just open their mouth a little wider' when they 'sing' a song & or is that lip-sync a song?

For nearly two hours, JB carried the show in the way that only she can. And in the wake of all that laughter, the stress of the holiday season melted away like snow. For those in attendance Wednesday night, Christmas came early in the form of entertainment wrapped up in makeup and a wig.

Award-winning drag darling Jackie Beat has been wowing unsuspecting audiences since 1989. She has toured with Roseanne Barr as the comic legend's opening act, including a seven-week run at The New York New York in Las Vegas; written for TV (Hype! and The Sci Fi Channel's Tripping The Rift) and collaborated on special material with the like of Roseanne, Rosie O'Donnell, and Jennifer Coolidge; appeared in countless TV shows (Sex and the City), movies (Grief, Wigstock The Movie, Flawless, Adam & Steve), and Off-Broadway hits (Valley of the Dolls, Tell-Tale!). She has been named Best Drag Queen by the New York Press and Best Live Performance by HX Magazine. Jackie is also a columnist, lead singer for the electro-rock band Dirty Sanchez, and the subject of the documentary film My Name is Jackie Beat which includes commentary from Joan Rivers, Margaret Cho, and Roseanne.
