Lashes Christmas Show - R Place's holiday must-see

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Lashes Cabaret Christmas Show
December 16-17
R Place

Lashes Cabaret, with host Lady Chablis, is a Gay Seattle staple. Every Friday and Saturday, the drag queens and occasional dancers put on a solid show. Lashes Cabaret is a constant - always there, always good, and always full. Chablis and her girls are as much a part of R Place (619 Pine St.) as the loyal crowd that frequents the Capitol Hill hotspot. So it should come as no surprise that the cast has put together something special for the holiday season.

On December 16 and 17 (9:30 p.m.), R Place will present the 4th annual Lashes Cabaret Christmas Show with performances by Fraya Love, La Saveona Hunt, DonnaTella Howe, Sharon Husbenz, and host Lady Chablis, with special guest comedian and recording artist Wendy Ho. The shows are a benefit for Rise n' Shine.

Rise n' Shine provides emotional support programs, stability, advocacy, and AIDS education for children and teens affected by HIV/AIDS. Chablis and the staff, management, and cast of Lashes have raised funds for this organization in the past. On December 17, gifts will be presented to Rise n' Shine, according to R Place officials.

'The annual Lashes Christmas Show is the show that Chablis and I work hardest on,' DonnaTella Howe, the show's booking agent, told Seattle Gay News. 'The cast has been beefed up with special guest performances.'

Lashes cast members, drag queens from the Seattle and Everett Imperial Sovereign Courts, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, The Abbey of Saint Joan, and other members of the LGBT community will bring their A-game, DonnaTella Howe said.

'The show will feature many fantastic performers from different walks of life,' she said. 'It'll be a night of class, crass, camp, feathers, sequins, heels - the whole nine!'

Each year, the cast does a number where they take a Christmas classic and turn it on its head.

'I don't want to let on too much, but this is going to be an amazing show,' said DonnaTella Howe. The audience is always full of familiar faces who bring new friends, said Sharon Husbenz, a permanent cast member at Lashes Cabaret. 'There is a camaraderie with R Place's clientele that is unlike any other place. I would even say that the majority of them would consider each other as family. I know the bar staff feels that way. I have personally heard many of them say that.'

Lashes Cabaret is going strong. Sharon Husbenz said it is 'because we always do something a little different each show and we really have a diverse cast, which means there is a little something for everyone.'

Donna Tella Howe says it is important for the LGBT community to come together at shows like Lashes Christmas Show.

'During the holidays I think it becomes more important for some to be in a setting where they feel most comfortable,' she said. 'I go home for a time over the holidays and love my family, however, I love coming home to Capitol Hill as I have my life and friends here whom I consider to be my extended family.'

'As entertainers, we take this time as a chance to do something out of the norm - up the ante, if you will - like supporting a fantastic charity,' Donna Tella Howe concluded. 'It's a special time to shine and come together as a community and celebrate. Even if you're not totally into the holidays themselves, you get to see a lot more of what the community has to offer in terms of entertainment. You may see new sides to the performers you love and even be introduced to some you don't normally get to see.'
