Zimbabwe lawmaker arrested for calling Mugabe Gay

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

A member of Zimbabwe's parliament has been arrested for saying that President Robert Mugabe is Gay.

According to the Daily Nation newspaper, Lillian Kirenyi, a legislator from Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, was charged on December 20 with undermining the authority of Mugabe.

Tsvangirai - now Prime Minister of Zimbabwe under a fragile power-sharing agreement with his rival, Mugabe - told the BBC in an October interview that he wanted to see LGBT rights protected in Zimbabwe's new constitution.

Mugabe has been a fierce enemy of Zimbabwe's LGBT community, saying they were 'worse than pigs and dogs.' He also called British Prime Minister David Cameroon 'satanic' after Cameron said that Britain would cut aid to countries that criminalize same-sex relations.

The Daily Nation said that information given to a Zimbabwean court indicated that Kirenyi committed the alleged offence during an address to party supporters on December 9.

She is quoted as saying that 'Zanu PF [President Mugabe's party] members been attacking MDC president Tsvangirai alleging he is pro-homosexuals, yet Robert Mugabe has practiced homosexuality with [Professor] Jonathan Moyo [former Information minister] and Canaan Banana [Zimbabwe's first ceremonial president].'

Moyo, a powerful member of Mugabe's party, has called for Tsvangirai to resign after Tsvangirai broke off his 12-day marriage with Harrare commodities broker Locadia Karimatsenga last month.

Banana, who died in 2003, was deposed by Mugabe and later jailed for having sex with his bodyguards.

The Zimbabwean government reportedly argued against bail for Kirenyi, saying that she faces a serious charge, and that she might be harmed by Mugabe's supporters if she is released.
