A Dyke About Town: Tingstad and Rumbel remarkable at Jazz Alley

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer Seattle Men's Chorus
Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed the Seattle Men's Chorus concert Cool Yule: Big Band Theory at Benaroya Hall on December 19 a lot. Mercy's favorites were '50 Kilowatt Tree' and 'Christmas Classix.' She also liked 'Hot Hanukkah' with its pleasing choreography.

Cuteness liked 'Black Christmas,' but thought it was sad that there are only six African-American singers in the chorus. She also thought the lighting for 'Silent Night' was too dark, so it was hard to see the signing. The chorus received a well-deserved standing ovation

Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker
Mercy and Cuteness found Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker at the Triple Door on December 20 satisfying. The service was good.

Lily Verlaine was the artistic director, choreographer, and a dancer. Jasper McCann was the technical director, writer of scripts and lyrics, and emcee.

The ensemble's stripping to 'The Snow Waltz' was fun. In 'The Court of the Snow Queen,' Indigo Blue, Inga Ingenue, and Holly Pop danced pleasingly. In 'The Clockwork Doll,' Laurel Bordeaux danced nicely with Jasper McCann.

The Volga Boys ('The Russian Tepak Dance') involved some amazing tapping and stripping by Waxie Moon, Lily Verlaine, Kitten La Rue, and Wednesday Du Monde. Laurel Bordeaux and Paris Original did a sweet routine as the Mysterious Tea Mistresses ('Chinese Dance').

'Lu Roi du Rodentia (The Rat King)' was an amazing dance by Waxie Moon, who stripped down to fur briefs. Madame Ginger's 'Finishing School' included a dance involving popping balloons by Kitten La Rue, Indigo Blue, Babette La Fave, Laurel Bordeaux, and Wednesday Du Monde. Drag queen Patty O'Furniture demonstrated how to swing pasties. Lily Verlaine, Hazel Cupari, and Paris Original danced well in 'The Dream of the Coffee Casbah.'

'Heralds of the Land of the Sweets (Dance of the Angels)' was a gravity-defying dance by the Aerial Suites. Kitten LaRue and Wednesday Du Monde danced well in 'Cool it, Hot Chocolate (Spanish Dance)'. In 'The Countess of Candies (The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy),' Miss Indigo Blue danced deliciously. Lily Verlaine, Laurel Bordeaux, Paris Original, and the ensemble did a delightful closing in 'The Ballet Floreadora (Waltz of the Flowers).'

Cuteness liked the fact that the show appeals to Gay and straight audiences. She would like to see more change in material from year to year.

Tingstad and Rumbel
Mercy's friends Jewel and Renown went to see Tingstad and Rumbel at Jazz Alley on December 13 so Cuteness could stay home and wrap packages. Tingstad and Rumbel are celebrating a new CD, Badlands. Mercy thought Eric Tingstad's guitar was phenomenal, and Nancy Rumbel's ocarina, oboe, and English horn were outstanding. Gary Shelton's bass supported them well.

Renown said he had been hoping there would be more variety of strings, not just the guitar. Unfortunately for Renown, it was just guitar. Jewel said it was good they broke up into solos and duets, as it gave the mellow evening variety.

'God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen' was a nice opener, featuring Nancy on ocarina and English horn. Ocarina and oboe and bass were the focus of a medley of French carols. 'Chaco Canyon,' an original by Eric, featured ocarina and English horn.

Oboe was the focus of 'The Messiah.' Nancy left the stage and a duet of bass and guitar performed another Tingstad song, 'The Boot Whisperer.' She returned for 'Frosty the Snowman' with oboe.

Jewel's favorite was 'Crying,' the Roy Orbison song. Oboe was the focus of 'Oh Come, All Ye Faithful.' Ocarina informed 'Walking in the Air' by Howard Blake. A sing-along of 'Christmas, Don't Be Late' followed.

'Variations on a Theme by Grieg' was a guitar solo. Ocarina and oboe were the focus of 'Medicine Tree,' another Tingstad composition. A medley of 'Wipe Out' and 'Runaway' featured English Horn. Oboe was the focus of 'Here We Come A'Wassailing.' Ocarina informed 'Jingle Bells.' An encore of 'Drummer Boy' featured English horn, while oboe was the focus of 'Joy to the World.'

Pearl Django
Mercy and Cuteness are very much looking forward to seeing Pearl Django with guest star Martin Taylor at Jazz Alley. Band members include Troy Chapman (guitar), Ryan Hoffman (guitar), Rick Leppanen (bass), Michael Gray (violin), and David Lange (accordion). The band will be there January 3-8.

Pearl Django are a local group of very talented musicians, focusing on the music of Django Reinhardt. They have played all over the United States and internationally.
