GLBT and Growing Older: Legal Issues in the Golden Years

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The GLBT Bar Association Foundation of Washington (QLaw Foundation) is scheduled to present a community education event focusing on legal issues facing elder members of Washington's LGBT community.

This presentation is the third in a series of community education panels presented as part of Project OUTreach, an effort by the QLaw Foundation to provide legal information to community members throughout Washington state, according to officials.

The event, titled 'GLBT and Growing Older: Legal Issues in the Golden Years,' will take place January 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library (425 Harvard Ave. E.).

The event is free and open to the public.

According to organizers, the event will include presentations by a panel of preeminent attorneys, including Judi O'Kelley of Lambda Legal, Lisa Brodoff of Seattle University School of Law, and Amy Freeman of Columbia Legal Services. June Krumpotick of Legal Voice will moderate the discussion.

'Panelists will discuss a wide range of legal issues that GLBT elders face, including long-term care financing, planning for incapacity and death, and unique concerns that impact GLBT people as they age,' QLaw officials told Seattle Gay News.

A podcast of the event will be available at www.q-law.org/educationcommittee, along with podcasts of the QLaw Foundation's previous community education panels on bullying in public schools and LGBT parenting issues.

Support for Project OUTreach is provided by a generous grant from the Pride Foundation.

The GLBT Bar Association of Washington Foundation exists to bridge the divide between the LGBT community and legal professionals. Through its programs, the foundation seeks to educate the public and the courts about LGBT legal issues and empower community members through informed access to the legal and judicial systems. In addition to Project OUTreach, the foundation's programs include a summer grant program that offers summer internship grants to law students to work on projects that benefit the LGBT community and/or people living with HIV/AIDS. The foundation also offers, in conjunction with the King County Bar Association, a monthly legal clinic that provides free legal advice on LGBT issues.
