Century High a whirl of comedy, dance, and theater

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Century High
Century Ballroom
January 21, 28, and February 4

Century High, Century Ballroom's latest cabaret, is a gas. With a storyline that weaves in and out of classic dance movies (think Grease and Dirty Dancing with an even campier twist) paired with comedy and dancing that rivals that of a full-blown off-Broadway production, Century High is the one dinner cabaret you need to see this winter.

The 2012 run isn't the first go-round for Century High. Last year, Seattle Gay News was invited to the show, and I raved about it. If you missed it in 2011, you're in luck; the new production is even better than the original. The costumes have been tweaked, and some outrageous wigs and new dances have been added. Only the story remains the same - and that's good! Why change it? Watching Century High again felt like cozying up to watch a favorite movie, only it's live and commercial-free!

The storyline is sure to have you in stitches. Baby's family (played by the amazingly talented BenDeLaCreme as Baby, with The Cherdonna & Lou Show as mom and dad) have just moved to the small town of OddFellow, a place where traditional values are held in high esteem and there is a ban on the one act that threatens to crumble them: dance!

Century High School is full of well-mannered students (Inga Ingenue aka 'The Little Blonde Bomb' and Miss(ter) Waxie Moon) just trying to make the grade, but a few rebellious nogoodniks (Michelle Badion, Alison Cockrill, Deron Hayes, Hallie Kuperman, Ruby Mimosa, Wladamir Pino, Joshua Welter, and Joshua Sturgeon) who refuse to stand still to the beat of everyone else's drum have formed a rough-and-tumble dance gang - and they ain't listenin' to nobody, nohow!

Being the new girl in school is always hard, but when Baby falls for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, she must choose between her conservative upbringing and giving in to her own primal urges - to Lindy hop, salsa, and bachata the night away.

Century High is a fantastic evening of dining, dancing, and debauchery presented in a high-spirited camp comedy performance. The dancing is superb, as one would expect from a group of actors consisting mostly of dance teachers at Century Ballroom. The TV viewing sequences starring Dance Belt are a highlight, as well as the tap-dancing guardian angel. If you are a fan of comedy, dance, and theater - or all three - Century High is for you!

The best way to enjoy Century High is to spring for dinner, too. A three-course meal, with vegetarian option, is prepared by the Tin Table restaurant staff and is worth every cent. The butternut squash soup is the perfect starter for the roasted beef culotte, vegetable lasagna, or grilled chicken breast. A cheesecake with lemon curd, winter berries, and shortbread crust has been prepared for dessert. Dinner before the show is a great 'date night' option or a wonderful meal shared among friends.

The price of your ticket includes beginning dance lessons and dancing all night inside the beautiful Century Ballroom following the show. Prices range from $20 for the show and dancing and $55 for dinner, show, and dancing. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/214680. Hurry and buy a ticket, as there are only three opportunities left for you to enjoy Century High: January 21, 28, and February 4.

Century High is an evening of salsa, tango, Lindy hop, tap, and West Coast swing performances you won't soon forget.
