From Russia with love: Sasha Gradiva takes on the U.S.

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Talented, gorgeous, and unstoppable, it was only a matter of time before international pop sensation Sasha Gradiva landed stateside. This fierce and fearless performer, songwriter, and fashion fanatic is creating buzz on both coasts with her innovative, futuristic, electro-flavored sound and ultra-energized choreography. Sasha's unique style is highlighted by awe-inspiring, avant-garde stage costumes, providing a fresh take on the contemporary dance/pop scene.

Currently, Sasha is in the studio with superstar hit-maker Tricky Stewart (the man behind No. 1 smash hits such as Rihanna's 'Umbrella' and Beyoncé's 'Single Ladies'), but the pop star first achieved international success in with her solo albums Sasha and Say My Name with Love. Sasha has already graced covers of Vogue and Cosmopolitan abroad - and if you haven't seen this pop star stateside yet, you certainly will soon. Sasha Gradiva's first English-language album is set for release in early 2012.

Seattle Gay News caught up with Sasha to discuss her love of music, Gay fans, and where she will take her career in 2012.

Sasha Gradiva has never been to Seattle. But she did fly over it and said seeing the Emerald City from the air 'automatically made me feel comfortable.'

'Seattle has a certain peaceful calmness to it,' she said. 'That's how I felt watching it from the sky. It looked absolutely beautiful from up there - I will definitely visit it in the future!'

And we want her to. Her star is on the rise, and Seattle has become a dance and electro-pop must-visit for artists in the genre. 'Dance music is in my blood,' she told Seattle Gay News. 'Most dance music is based on harmonies that are native to Europe. As an artist from Europe, I'm made of these dance tunes and I'm thrilled this type of music found popularity in the United States. America, get ready to dance!'

Sasha says she has an appreciation for the enormous quantity of music - both old and new - found in the U.S. 'What I end up listening to over and over again is David Guetta, the Freemasons, Planet Funk, Daft Punk, and French electro bands, as well as a bunch of other songs that I consider to be part of the 'pop bible,' she said. 'Songs like George Michaels' 'Too Funky' and 'Freedom,' or Shakespear's Sister's 'In Vogue.' The list can go on and on.'

According to Sasha, 'America seems to be open to absolutely everything, old and new.'

'It's amazing how the country is able to absorb any culture in the world and adopt it as its own,' she said. 'It does this with its own unique spin on things, of course. I think that this is the very reason why American entertainment is leading the world. I couldn't be happier to see people in the clubs of New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and other cities pumping up my music!'

Sasha says that her Gay fans were the first people to support her music in Europe and were the first to come to her U.S. appearances as well. 'It's a first-love relationship that you never forget and are always thankful for,' she said. 'The Gay community carries with it an open-mindedness that allows for creative and artistic experimentation. As an artist, it's no wonder that I feel so comfortable sharing my music and all of my creative endeavors with my Gay fans. I don't have to hold anything back.'

Sasha told Seattle Gay News she is confused about the Russian government's harsh anti-Gay sentiment. 'I have never been and never will be supportive of Russian politics on this topic. It seems even more ridiculous to me because I know members of the Russian government who are Gay,' she said. 'This double standard is a serious issue throughout the world and it should be spoken about. I will always do everything in my power to open people's eyes and ears when it comes to this issue. In fact, I am collaborating with major Gay promoters and charity organizations to hold a special performance that would possibly take place in New York City to help bring awareness to the problems that the Gay community faces.'

The young star said she just asks that her fans allow themselves to be who they really are and express themselves in their everyday lives. 'Find what you really love and go for it,' she said. 'You should know that we are a generation that can truly make a change in the world and have a true impact on the future.'

'It is always the right time to follow your dreams and to be happy,' concluded Sasha. 'Live all your days like they were your last and don't be afraid to take risks. Life equals risk, and I guess exposing yourself as you truly are, with all of your vulnerability is the biggest risk you can possibly take. Trust me, it's worth it!'
