Mat Kearney interview coming in February

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Mat Kearney has been around. In the music biz, that is. The Eugene-born musician released his first album in 2004, the little-heard-of Bullet on a small record label. These days, he's batting in the majors - a record deal with Universal, sold out concerts in New York, Boston and Chicago, and live appearances on late night talk shows. A former college athlete, Kearney has toured with several artists, including Sheryl Crow, Train and Owl City. But he'll soon be flying solo, embarking on the second leg of his winter headlining tour with a February 16 date at The Showbox Market. Before he arrives in the Emerald City, he's kicking back with me in 'The Music Lounge'. Grab a copy of Seattle Gay News on January 10 when I go one-on-one with singer-songwriter Mat Kearney.

Esperanza Spalding shocked millions when she won the coveted Best New Artist award on the 2011 Grammy Awards telecast, most of all a disappointed Justin Bieber who pouted all night in his big boy white tuxedo. Spalding, a Portland native, finally returns to Seattle for an April 24 performance at the Paramount Theatre. This marks the eclectic artist's first appearance here in about three years, when she last played at Jazz Alley. Spalding's new album, Radio Music Society, is set for a March 20 release. If you still haven't listened to this marvelously gifted young woman, check her out immediately on Spotify or YouTube. This is what the future of music should sound like.

Death Cab for Cutie will wrap up its spring tour at home. The Grammy-nominated quartet will play a short string of shows in Australia, Taiwan and Singapore, before returning stateside for another round of US dates in support of 2011's Codes and Keys album. DCFC is set to perform May 13 at the Paramount Theatre.

Legendary rock band Styx is making a return visit to the Puget Sound, announcing a February 3 concert at Emerald Queen Casino. The group enjoyed some level of dominance in the late 70s through mid-80s with a barrage of hits, such as 'The Best of Times', 'Come Sail Away', 'Lady', 'Renegade', and 'Mr. Roboto'. Last year, original Styx member Chuck Panozzo interviewed with Seattle Gay News and spoke of his experience of being openly Gay in an industry known for its machismo. Panozzo, also HIV-positive, wrote a memoir about his personal life intertwined with professional career entitled 'The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies and My Life With Styx'.

Visit www.emeraldqueen.com for ticket information on Styx's upcoming show, and you can read Panozzo's interview with me by going to www.sgn.org and clicking on the July 15, 2011 archive.

Finally, the first performers for next month's Grammy Awards have been revealed. Nicki Minaj, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars are set to appear on 'Music's Biggest Night', scheduled for February 12. Expect several more to be annouced soon, including Adele, Lady GaGa and possibly - if we're fortunate - Bon Iver.
