posted Friday, February 17, 2012 - Volume 40 Issue 07 Knights Out to host dinner at West Pointby Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor Knights Out, the organization of LGBT West Point grads, will host a dinner at West Point on March 31 to honor the contributions of LGBT soldiers and members of the Long Gray Line. Former Captain Jonathan Hopkins, USMA '01, will be honored for his service. Captain Hopkins, recipient of three Bronze Stars - one with a 'V' for Valor - was discharged in 2010 under the so-called 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy, but continued to serve, working with the Pentagon on DADT repeal implementation as a representative of OutServe, the association of actively serving LGBT military members. This dinner is the first of its kind at West Point, and is expected to become an annual event. Knights Out is a group of LGBT alumni of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and their allies. Knights Out was formed by a group of Gay and Lesbian West Pointers in March of 2009, with a twofold mission: (1) Support West Point in educating, training, and inspiring leaders of character for an Army that includes openly LGBT soldiers; and (2) Advocate for the rights of LGBT soldiers and their families. |
