SGN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Vonda Shepard goes solo in Seattle

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Vonda Shepard
February 22
The Triple Door

With over 12 million album sales to her name, two Golden Globes, two Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Billboard prize for selling the most television soundtrack records in history for the hit series Ally McBeal, Vonda is a world-renowned artist who continues to delight audiences with her magnanimous live performances. She dedicates songs, tells stories, and at the same time projects dynamic charisma and intimacy with her audience.

Vonda is scheduled to perform at The Triple Door (216 Union St.) on February 22 in support of her latest album, Solo.

Vonda and her piano. That's Solo, which features many of Vonda's originals, like 'Lose My Way,' 'Don't Cry Ilene,' 'The Sunset Marquis,' 'Soothe Me,' and 'I Know Better,' as well as some of her favorite cover ballads, like 'Walk Away Renee' and 'You Belong to Me.'

Vonda, who has performed at The Triple Door, as well as many other local venues and shows (including Bumbershoot), told Seattle Gay News she is looking forward to her upcoming show.

'This will be my first-ever solo show in Seattle,' said Vonda. 'I love The Triple Door. It's such a wonderful venue.'

The singer-songwriter said she adores Seattle. 'It's clean and the city has a calm, yet creative feel to it,' she said. 'It's so different from Los Angeles, which is where I live. I just love the vibe of Seattle and the people are really down-to-earth. I could really see myself living there.'

Vonda, who admits that she loves touring, said that her latest tour has been a wonderful experience.

'Alley McBeal was a pop culture show,' she told SGN. 'It's what I'm known for with many people. A lot of fans know my cover tunes from the show's soundtrack. With Solo, I am able to share with the audience a lot of my original work.'

Vonda got the idea for the album from hardcore fans who love to hear her original songs, but requested stripped-down versions of them. 'I recently toured Europe with Solo,' she said. 'I'm used to having a band along with me to back me up onstage. But this time around, it's just me and a piano, so in a way I've conquered a huge challenge and I'm really having a good time.'

Solo provides the perfect opportunity to get to know Vonda's earthy and accessible style and her intimate interaction with her audience. 'I like to tell stories in between the songs, which really pulls the audience in,' she told SGN. 'It's just been really nice to laugh and share things with the audience. The show is really intimate.'

Vonda, who's recorded songs with everyone from Gladys Knight, Sting, Al Green, and Jon Bon Jovi, said that her music tastes run the gamut. 'Right now I'm really into a French underground band called Pepper Island,' she said. 'They are just fantastic.'

'I like a mixture of some of the new music that is out right now,' she continued. 'I love listening to Billie Holiday when I'm cooking. But then I also might want to blast Soundgraden.'

Vonda told SGN she has nothing but love for her Gay fans. 'My Gay fans are amazing! I feel very supported by them,' she said. 'There's so much loyalty there.'

'When I'm on stage and I look out and see same-sex couples together enjoying the show, it's just such a great feeling for me to see that,' said Vonda. 'I always feel like the more Gay people in the audience the better!'

Vonda is a strong advocate for marriage equality. 'I am, without a doubt, 100% in favor of same-sex marriage,' she told SGN. 'It is so thrilling that states such as Washington are, one by one, accepting the obvious as the norm. I just know that the wildfire of equality will spread throughout the country.'

'Come down and hang out with me,' Vonda said. 'After the show, I meet with fans. It's gonna be nice.'

'I'm going to knock the roof off the house,' she promised.
