Join us at Purr for a laid-back Oscar party

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

George Clooney or Jean Dujardin? Meryl Streep or Viola Davis? Martin Scorcese or Michel Hazanavicius? 'Man or Muppet' or 'Real in Rio'?

These contests - and the all-important one for Best Picture, with nine films competing for the prize this year - will be decided on February 26 during the Academy Awards telecast. It's the mother of award shows, the Super Bowl for fashionistas, and the time of year when we realize that those $10 movie tickets and $7 buckets of popcorn help pay for some really hideous formal gowns (or swan dresses).

Rather than watch alone or spend money to see the Oscars somewhere else, consider rooting for your favorites right on Capitol Hill. Seattle Gay News and Purr have teamed up again to host a casual Academy Awards viewing party that won't cost you a dime, except for what you order from the bar or kitchen. The mood will be festive, if not intense (I'm actually cheering for a Michelle Williams upset), and the atmosphere is inviting to all types of people and all levels of film geeks.

Prize packages, also at no cost, will include gift certificates, DVDs, music CDs, film memorabilia, and other goodies. Ballots should be completed and turned into the bar staff before the telecast begins. Arrive early for good seats, and don't miss all the fun with the red carpet arrivals!

Bring your friends, co-workers, neighbors, or just come stag. Either way, this is the party to be at on Oscar Sunday, February 26, and it's totally free. Look for the Purr ad in this issue of Seattle Gay News.
