Joan Rivers harsh and hilarious at Benaroya Hall

by Aiden Klein - Special to SGN

Just days after the Academy Awards, comedienne, reality TV star, and fashion police icon Joan Rivers performed live at Seattle's Benaroya Hall.

Rivers' performance was vulgar and unapologetic, and the audience loved her for it. Rivers reigned supreme over the packed house of loyal fans as she ranted (in the way that only she can!) about Gays, Mexicans, Chinese, the disabled, and everyone else who she claims not to like. Of course, it's all in good fun, which is part of the joke. Her quick wit and sharp tongue were in fine tune, as no one was off-limits to Rivers' ruthless - yet hilarious - insults.

Not even the late Whitney Houston was left unscathed. Too soon? Joan doesn't think so! But that's probably because that is what the audience expects of her. It is what we crave from her. She's never been one to shy away from controversy, telling jokes about sex, race, abortion, or anything else provocative, for that matter.

Onstage, Rivers is as comfortable as ever and clearly in a league of her own. The veteran of comedy (she got her start in the 1960s) delivered punchline after punchline with such energy and vigor you find yourself asking in disbelief, 'Is she really 78 years old?'

But age hasn't slowed her down one bit. Rivers appears with her daughter Melissa in the reality series Joan Knows Best, is a co-host on Fashion Police and promotes her brand of jewelry on QVC.

Rivers was on fire as she paced back and forth on the Benaroya Hall stage, ripping the Hollywood elite - from Betty White to Angelina Jolie - a new one.

Proving to the audience that she can take what she dishes out, the legendary comedienne not only hurled insults at celebrities, but threw a few at herself.

After the show had ended, Joan reappeared on stage for a brief encore, wearing a Statue of Liberty costume and declaring, ' We have freedom of speech. I can say what the fuck I want!' as she threw potted plants into the audience.

Rivers' brand of comedy stems from her keen ability to observe the world around her and then speak her mind. In a recent interview with the Seattle Times, Rivers said, 'I think a good comedian has to be able to say what you really think, and that takes a lot of guts. For something to be funny, it has to be true. That's the basis for all comedy.'
