March is Cabaret Month!

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Pacific Northwest Cabaret Association (PNWCA) presents the 5th Annual 'March is Cabaret Month' celebration for two consecutive Saturdays, March 3 and March 10, at Egan's Ballard Jam House (1707 N.W. Market St.).

PNWCA is composed of various performers dedicated to American-style cabaret.

'The American-style cabaret form first began in the speakeasies of New York and had its heyday in the 1950s until the early 1970s, where cabaret luminaries - Barbra Streisand, Beth Midler, Woody Allen, and Joan Rivers, to name a few - were 'discovered' by the mainstream audience,' said PNWCA officials. 'The American-style cabaret form distinguishes itself from other cabaret forms by its minimalistic style of delivery; its primary, but not exclusive, focus on the American songbook; and the breaking of the 'fourth wall,' thus giving its audience a more intimate musical experience.'

There are four diverse shows displaying the award-winning talents of many of Seattle's cabaret performers and music directors. It is important to note that most of the participants have attended the International Cabaret Conference at Yale University.

Featured performers include:

Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse and Cheryl Serio with musical director Victor Janusz
March 3, 7 p.m.

All three performers are well-known as outstanding cabaret acts. Arnaldo! is a founding member of PNWCA and has performed to full houses from New York to Puerto Vallarta. Cabaret and Arnaldo! are synonymous with one another in Seattle, where she has been entertaining audiences for years as the premier voice of cabaret. Teaming with the vocal stylings of Cheryl Serio - another founding member of PNWCA - who has been wowing audiences for the past decade at concerts, casinos, and special events, this promises to be a knockout show. In addition, full-time singer-pianist Victor Janusz (Columbia Tower Club, Salty's on Alki, and more) joins the act as musical director.

Judy Ann Moulton, Kim Maguire, and Marcus Wolland, with musical director Victor Janusz
March 3, 9 p.m.

Moulton, Wolland, and Maguire are a trio of cabaret gold. Moulton has performed on Pacific Northwest stages for nearly 25 years and is known for (among many other things) her award-winning show Judy Sings Judy. Wolland has performed as a cabaret act for 12 years in the region, appearing alongside Moulton and Maguire at previous occasions. Maguire is a 30-year cabaret veteran who's traveled the country performing everywhere from NYC to Houston to Minneapolis and Seattle. Seattle's Piano Man, Victor Janusz, joins the group as musical director.

Ter Gallagher and Jerome Elliott with musical director Daryl Spadaccini
March 10, 7 p.m.

Gallagher has spent many years performing jazz, classic rock, rock, R&B, blues, and classic and new country all over western Washington. She won 'Female Vocalist of the Year' at the Juneteenth Gospel competition. Gallagher's performances are always met with rave reviews. Palm Springs-based singer and actor Elliott made his Seattle cabaret debut in 2010 and his New York debut in 2011. Jerome is one of Palm Springs' most popular cabaret performers. The two cabaret entertainers are joined on stage by musical director Daryl Spadaccini, who is no stranger to Northwest venues; his musical director credits include 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle Children's Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Shunpike, and several Kitsap theatres. He has been doing cabaret shows here since the '70s. He spends six months of the year playing piano on Holland America cruise ships.

Jeannette d'Armand and Arnaldo Inocentes with musical director Daryl Spadaccini
March 10, 9 p.m.

D'Armand has a list of credits that include Cirque du Soleil's Mystére; 5th Avenue's Oklahoma!, Sweeney Todd, and The Sound of Music; Village Originals; and Balagan Theatre's Spring Awakening. Inocentes, the man behind the character Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse, has performed around the U.S. - and the world - as a former soloist of the Seattle Men's Chorus. He has also produced and directed various community shows and fundraisers in the Seattle area. Again, Spadaccini serves as musical director.

Egan's is an all-ages venue until 11 p.m. Tickets are $15, with a two-drink minimum per show. If you'd like to see more than one show, tickets are discounted to $13 per show, with a two-drink minimum. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com. Each show has a different event number so just type in 'March is Cabaret Month 2012' and select the night you wish to purchase tickets for.
