The phenomenal Limón Dance Company

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Limón Dance Company
Mercy, Cuteness, and their friend Lucky ate up the Limón Dance Company at University of Washington World Dance Series. The group was founded by the late José Limón and is based in New York City.

They opened with 'There Is a Time' to 'Meditations on Ecclesiastes' by Carl Fisher. The choreography was by Limón.

There were circles, male and female solos, and pas de deuxes. Mercy liked the folk costumes and folk movements. Lucky said the number was stunning. She liked how happy the woman's dance was. Mercy said, 'Two thumbs up. Intensely luscious.' She also liked the music and the lights.

Mercy found the second number 'Chaconne,' to J. S. Bach's 'Chaconne from Partita No. 2 for Violin,' a pleasing combination of classical music and modern dance. Cuteness found the music and dance beautiful. It was also choreographed by Limón and was a solo by Raphael Boumaila.

'The Moor's Pavanne (Variations on a theme of Othello)' was next, to music by Henry Purcell. It was also choreographed by José Limón. Mercy liked the Elizabethan costumes and dance inspired by that era. It was fun to watch the story of Othello enacted. Cuteness thought Dante Puleio, as the Moor's friend, had amazing flexibility.

'Come With Me' was inspired by the music 'The Ladies in White' by Paquito D'Rivera. It was a world premiere. Lucky pointed out the choreographer, Rodrigo Pederneiras, is the choreographer for Grupo Corpo in Brazil. Mercy liked the colorful costumes and Cuban music and dance. She didn't get the connection with the Ladies in White.

Cuteness thought the whole program was great. The audience agreed and gave the group a standing ovation.

There was a question-and-answer period after the performance. Artistic director Carla Maxwell was asked whether it was hard to continue after founding director Limón died in 1972. She said people thought they would disband at that point. If they had, the work would have disappeared. They realized it was more than his work. Limón had produced company members' work. It wasn't just about him. He wanted them to find their own vision.

The point of view was not to have a smorgasbord, but to create dance that was about José. Limón expected them to rise to the occasion and find themselves in the dance. The value and the power of the work is what has sustained them. Part of the legacy of José was not to be afraid to make mistakes.

Dark Divas and Lucy Wainwright Roche
Mercy is really looking forward to seeing Dark Divas at the Triple Door on Sunday, March 11. The production is about famous African-American performers: Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, Billie Holiday, Moms Mabley, Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, and Eartha Kitt. The first half is set at the Apollo Theater, the second at the Cotton Club.

The divas are Stephine Hadley, Nyema Clark, Gwendolyn Coats, Demene Hall, Kibibi Monié, and Umeme Upenzi, and the musicians are Mark Adams, Jerry Henderson, Lonnie Williams, Darryl Silvers, and Janice Scroggins.

Mercy is really looking forward to Lucy Wainwright Roche at the Triple Door on Wednesday, March 14. Lucy is the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche of the Roches, and the half-sister of Rufus Wainwright. Her debut album was Lucy.

You can get your tickets for both Dark Divas and Lucy Wainwright Roche at thetripledoor.net.
