Volunteers sought for SEAMEC endorsement panel

Seattle-area LGBTs interested in electoral politics are needed to help interview candidates for the Seattle Metropolitan Elections Committee's 2012 voter guide.

'The new 10th Congressional District will elect its first congressperson [this year], and we want to help ensure that the individual elected is supportive of our issues,' said SEAMEC Co-Chair Dave Haining.

SEAMEC starts the evaluation process by sending each candidate a questionnaire that assesses their attitude, previous support, and involvement in areas important to the LGBT community. Candidates who wish to receive a SEAMEC rating and possible endorsement are then interviewed by volunteer panels. The resulting ratings and endorsements are widely disseminated throughout the community for both the primary and general elections, to help voters make informed decisions.

Interviews will take place in the evening beginning June 4 and continuing through most of the month. Those interested in being part of this process should contact SEAMEC at (206) 905-9941 and leave their name, phone number, and e-mail address.

'It's not only fun and informative to meet the individuals who will represent the interests of the community, but you will be providing a valuable service to the entire electoral process,' Haining said. 'We anticipate interviewing more than 50 candidates for local, statewide, and national elected positions. Your help is definitely needed.'

SEAMEC has been interviewing and rating candidates for public office since 1977.
