Pride Idol week 7: Moon wins

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

One of the most enduring aspects of Pride Idol, since its humble beginnings a few years back, is that so many contestants return to give it another shot. Each time, they show improvement and the audience gets to know them better. A familiar face, a good voice, and a sense of community - 2012 Pride Idol week seven is the perfect example of 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.' Of the week's seven contestants, five were familiar with the Pride Idol stage. One of them, Moon, went on to win.

Smirnoff, Seattle's Best Karaoke, Neighbours Seattle, Seattle Gay News, and MOViN 92.5 present Seattle Pride Idol.

Pride Idol is a citywide singing contest hosted by Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P), running every Sunday night at Neighbours Seattle leading up to 2012 Seattle Pride. Doors open at 6 p.m. for open karaoke, hosted by SO&P's Eric Bennett. Contestants must sign up by 7:30 p.m. in order to compete at 8 p.m., when the show begins. The Grand Finale is scheduled for June 10, when a winner will be chosen as Seattle's 2012 Pride Idol!

Returning as host, Gaysha Starr costumed herself to be 'with child' on Mother's Day and said she was in search of her 'baby's daddy.' The amazingly talented Honey Bucket (pronounced 'bouquet') performed two of her hilarious original songs, very reminiscent of Jackie Beat and Dina Martina. Honey joined the judges' panel of Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, Sister of Perpetual Indulgence Domine Trix, and me as we voted to advance one contestant to the Wildcard Round and another to the finals.

Newcomer Jason Carrion advanced to the Wildcard Round after flawlessly delivering one of Maroon 5's biggest hits, 'She Will Be Loved.' Jason nailed the vocals, had the song memorized, and performed with ease. Wildcard contestants beware: Jason is this round's dark horse.

Moon, winner of week seven, embodies diversity. She has performed a little bit of everything, from Nelly Furtado to Eminem, and now Adele's 'Set Fire to the Rain.' Always dressed for the part, brimming with confidence, and ready to win, it was heartwarming to see an emotional Moon announced as moving on to the Finale. I'm not sure if it is deliberate or not, but 2012 Pride Idol finalists should be careful because you never know what Moon is going to bring to the competition.

Each week there is a nightly prize of $100 for first place and a spot in the Wildcard Round for second place.

Who's going to take home the Pride Idol trophy and prizes this year? Why not you? You can sign up in person the night of the competition or online at www.seattlepride.org/idol-register.html. There is a $10 fee to enter the contest.

This year's Grand Finale prize package is very attractive: $200 will go to third place, $500 to second place, and first prize is $1,000 and a chance to perform aboard the Seattle Out and Proud float during the Seattle Pride Parade June 24. Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P) produces Seattle's annual Pride parade. Come out and sing! Show us what you've got and become Seattle's next Pride Idol!
