Dow Constantine has $11,300 surprise for Approve Ref. 74 campaign

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

King County Executive Dow Constantine held his annual Filing Week Luncheon on May 18 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. As the roughly 600 attendees prepared to donate to Constantine's reelection campaign, the county head approached the podium and made a surprising request. In lieu of donating to his campaign, he asked that patrons give instead to Washington United for Marriage, which is spearheading the drive to Approve Referendum 74.

'For a while now it has been clear that marriage equality and the campaign to Approve Referendum 74 would be a defining issue on the ballot this year and needed our strong and unified support,' Constantine told SGN.

Donations at the event totaled $11,300.

'We are very grateful for Dow's support of Washington United for Marriage as we fight to uphold Washington's marriage equality law,' Zach Silk, campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage, told SGN. 'The county executive has long been a champion on issues of fairness and dignity for everyone. It was incredibly generous of him to have his supporters help us. He knows that winning approval of Referendum 74 in November is going to take all of us pulling together. We'll be sure to put every dollar to good use.'

Washington United for Marriage is still in need of financial support. To donate or to learn more, visit www.washingtonunitedformarriage.org.

'This has long been a priority for me and I knew this was a real opportunity to lend a hand and raise the visibility of this critical campaign,' Constantine told SGN.

'This is going to be a very expensive campaign,' Silk said. 'Our opponents have pledged to spend over $7 million to roll back marriage equality. We need to match them dollar for dollar. And that means we need people to make an early investment in the campaign.'
