Valley Medical Center (VMC) of Renton has been recognized as a 'Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality' in the Healthcare Equality Index 2012 report, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country's largest LGBT organization.

VMC earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who often face challenges in accessing adequate care.

'In many health care environments the LGBT community faces challenges in obtaining equitable, inclusive treatment,' said VMC spokesperson Barbara Mitchell. 'That is not true at VMC. Whether you are a LGBT patient, family member, visitor, potential employee, or seasoned staff, you are fully respected and welcome.'

VMC was one of 234 health facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet several key indicators for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff.

HRC Family Project Director Ellen Kahn congratulated VMC on the survey results.

'LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a leader in LGBT health care equality. It makes a big difference to know that your local health care facility is fully committed to giving you the same care it gives your neighbors and co-workers.'
