New Pride Foundation ad focused on love and commitment

by Christina Rocks - Special to the SGN

The Rev. Gib Rossing of Olympia and his wife, Beth, who have been married for 52 years, talk about the importance of marriage for their four children, including their Gay son and his partner, in a new TV ad by the Pride Foundation.

This is the second statewide ad released by the nonprofit Seattle-based community foundation, which has led the ongoing public education campaign on the freedom to marry.

The ad focuses on the Rossings' son Jonathan and their hopes for him to be able to marry his long-term partner, Ryan. It emphasizes that all loving and committed couples, both Gay and straight, hope to marry for the same reasons - to make a lifetime promise to another person and to share the joys and challenges that life brings.

'We believe this spot will resonate with so many families in Washington who don't distinguish between one child or another, and simply want the very best for all their children, including being able to one day marry the person they love,' said Kris Hermanns, executive director of Pride Foundation. 'Reverend and Mrs. Rossing speak for so many parents and will help expand our conversations with Washingtonians about the importance of marriage for all loving and committed couples.'

The Rossing ad follows another that debuted during the telecast of the Olympics opening ceremonies and features Cheryl Pflug, a Republican former Washington state senator.

The ad campaign is an extension of Pride Foundation's effort to reach and educate the public on the impact that the freedom to marry will have on real Washingtonians' lives. Pride Foundation has done comparable education efforts for years in Washington and across the Northwest on critical issues facing the LGBTQ community.

You can watch the ad at http://whymarriagematterswashington.org/journey.

Pride Foundation is a donor-supported community foundation providing grants, scholarships, and community leadership in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. As a catalyst for change, Pride Foundation supports transformative philanthropy, programs, and individuals who advance equality for the LGBTQ community.

Christina Rocks is the Pride Foundation's communications manager.
