HOT CHIP
PARAMOUNT THEATRE
September 14
Friday Night Fever? It sure felt like it. Of course, I'm referring to the Hot Chip concert last weekend at the Paramount Theatre, which was more of a dance party than anything else.
The multi-member electronic outfit whose lead singer, Alexis Taylor, interviewed with SGN before the show, performed around 15 songs, from their new album In Our Heads and from previous records. Most of the band's bigger hits were played during the concert's first half, causing the second half to sag a bit. Overall, though, the energy in the room was really exciting, as most everyone danced to whatever Hot Chip did - even to a few slow numbers.
'Ready for the Floor' sounded deeper and cooler and appeared to be an extended remix, while 'Night & Day' was performed to a backdrop of sharp blue lighting. Bells (perhaps cowbells) were rung during 'Over and Over,' easily one of the evening's best-received songs.
'We love Seattle!' exclaimed Taylor in the middle of the set, before jumping into a soft rendition of 'These Chains' that found a few concertgoers on the main floor doing some kind of interpretative dance. The crowd was a friendly clash of Gay men, straight couples, and college kids.
'One Life Stand' started out with robotic voices that slowly crept back in about midway through, and a mediocre cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Everywhere' was mildly entertaining. 'Flutes' and 'I Feel Better' also got playtime during Friday's performance, which featured a hyper display of stage lighting.
Before exiting the stage, Taylor declared, 'We love you!' three times over loud cheers, and then, 'We thank you!'
After Hot Chip skipped the Northwest on their last tour, Seattle fans were eager to see the band live again. The sweaty foreheads and damp T-shirts visible when the lights went up offered proof that they had made up for lost time.
