Karl Rove hates Tammy Baldwin
Group led by 'Bush's brain' is going all-out against Lesbian candidate

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS is running $1.2 million worth of TV spots attacking Lesbian Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin in her U.S. Senate race.

Baldwin, now a Democratic member of Congress representing the Madison area, is running against former Wisconsin governor and Bush cabinet secretary Tommy Thompson for an open U.S. Senate seat.

'Tammy Baldwin's tax and spending agenda is just too extreme for Wisconsin,' the Rove ad says.

The ad also attacks Baldwin for 'rubber stamping' the so-called Wall Street bailout, the stimulus bill, and President Obama's health care reform.

'We just can't afford Tammy Baldwin's tax-and-spend rubber stamp in Washington,' the ad claims.

BALDWIN CONFIDENT
Baldwin's campaign responded to the Crossroads ad on September 26, saying Rove was wasting his money on the race.

'Despite spending over $6 million attacking Tammy Baldwin this year, all the public polls show we are moving in the right direction,' Baldwin's communications director, John Kraus, said in a statement.

'The fact that Karl Rove spent one million dollars attacking us last week and another one million dollars this week, proves that point.'

An NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll released September 20 showed Baldwin slightly ahead of Thompson, 48% to 46%. A separate Marquette University poll, released September 18, showed Baldwin leading by nine points.

THOMPSON BLAMES ROMNEY
Thompson has blamed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for his poor showing in the polls.

'The presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election,' Thompson told Madison television station WKOW recently.

'You know, whether you're a Democrat or Republican, if your standard-bearer for the presidency is not doing well, it's going to reflect on the down-ballot.'

The Wisconsin ad buy is just one part of a total $6.4 million that Crossroads has poured into Senate races in the past week. Rove is spending about $1.8 million on ads in Florida and another $1 million in the Indiana Senate race. He is also buying spots in Ohio, Virginia, and Nevada.

Crossroads GPS is a spin-off of Rove's American Crossroads Super PAC. Such groups are not allowed to coordinate directly with candidates or their campaign organizations, but they may run so-called 'issue' ads, like the one attacking Baldwin for 'tax and spend' policies.

As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, such entities are legally entitled to spend any amount they wish on political ads. In Speechnow.org v. FEC, decided only two months after Citizens United, a federal appeals court said that Super PACs may also raise as much money as they wish from whatever sources they wish.
