Hanging out backstage with Garbage

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

I often turn down backstage opportunities because I don't like playing the part of a groupie. But when Shirley Manson extended an invite before going on stage at The Showbox SoDo last week, I just couldn't refuse. As a thank-you, I gifted her a six-pack of Cupcake Royale signature treats, which she promised to share with her fellow band members. Besides the band, there were about 10 of us in the upstairs dressing room. Shirley and her bandmate Duke Erikson offered my friend and me beverages - I chose a beer, my companion some wine. After snapping photos, Shirley asked if I wanted to check out her wardrobe (yes, please!). While the other band members each have one rollaway case, she has two - one with slide-out drawers that carry everything from tights to hair accessories, and another for her dresses, coats, and other stage threads. She also had a three-mirror vanity with the set list for the concert taped to the top.

Shirley and I spoke about Gwen Stefani, whom she calls a 'real fashion icon.' We discussed Kings of Leon, with whom she has performed in the past. She unsurprisingly described them as 'hot,' but she also said they're really cool guys and that she likes them a lot. She's got a wicked sense of humor and is very down to earth. At one point I almost choked on a sip of beer, prompting me to say, 'Normally, I swallow,' and she quickly replied, 'That's what she said.' Butch Vig, who interviewed with SGN several years ago, was very kind and accommodating as well, and invited us to come back following the show.

So we did. About as many people were backstage after the show as before, and we drank while listening to good tunes. I glanced at the band's pre-performance dinner sheet and noticed that Shirley had eight pieces of sushi and miso soup that evening. She spent most of the time in her dressing room afterward, although she did come out and speak to my friend and me for just a bit. She also gave hugs to a couple of guys (possibly Gay) from Olympia, both of them beaming with joy. Shirley's rollaway cases were the final ones to be loaded out of the dressing room. We hugged, exchanged pleasant farewells and then excused ourselves to allow Garbage to depart for their next stop, Portland. Outside the stage door, about three dozen fans were awaiting the group's exit. I'm pretty sure they got their wish for photos and autographs, as the band seemed incredibly friendly and approachable.

GIBBARD ADDS A SECOND SHOW
Ben Gibbard, who is scheduled to perform a benefit concert October 9 at Seattle's Smith Tower for the marriage equality campaign, has announced another area performance - this one isn't a benefit - at the historic Washington Hall on November 17. The Death Cab for Cutie lead singer/guitarist releases his sophomore solo album, Former Lives, on October 16. For all tour information, visit www.facebook.com/bengibbardofficial.

STEVIE NICKS DOC PREMIERES
Rock goddess Stevie Nicks, who interviewed with me last year, will soon release a feature documentary about the making of her latest album. In Your Dreams - Stevie Nicks will premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival on October 7 and the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 12 (the latter screening has already sold out). The film focuses on the collaboration between Nicks and producer Dave Stewart, as well as never-before-seen scrapbook stills from her childhood, plus backstage and performance shots from the past 35 years. A nationwide theatrical release has not been announced, but if a Seattle showing materializes I'll let you know. Nicks is set to appear October 15 at an Elton John AIDS Foundation benefit concert in New York.

SGN IN A FINE FRENZY
Finally, don't miss our interview with Seattle-born artist A Fine Frenzy in The Music Lounge next week. She opens for Joshua Radin on October 18 at the Moore Theatre.
