Seattle drag standout Fraya Love spills her secrets

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On March 31, 2011, Fraya Love arrived in Seattle from Oxnard, California, and Capitol Hill hasn't been the same since. In just two short years Fraya Love has gone from 'guest performer' to 'cast member' and established herself as a go-to queen for any promoter looking to add some excitement to the party.

'One day I just decided to jump into my car and drive,' Fraya Love, who was born and raised in Oxnard, told Seattle Gay News, adding, 'and I've been calling the Emerald City my home ever since.'

Fraya Love, 24 as of Pride Sunday of this year, stands out in a crowd. But most drag queens do, so let me rephrase that: Fraya Love stands out in a crowd of drag queens. There is nothing about her that says conforming is in her blood. She's impersonated Madonna, danced her ass off as a cast member of 'Lashes' at R Place (619 E. Pine St.), and was a competitor in a show queen pageant all in the same breath. With Fraya Love on the show bill, it is safe to say you never know exactly what you are going to get, but you do know it will be good because whichever direction she takes her audience, that audience will gladly go.

Everyone knows that a drag queen's name is a very important thing. Fraya Love tells SGN she was given her name by Julia's on Broadway's (300 Broadway E.) 'An Evening at Le Faux' cast member Jaxen Brown and his drag sister Isis. 'My drag mother is Jaxen Brown. However, Isaac Scott [also of 'An Evening at Le Faux'] has had a tremendous influence on me in the past few months,' she said.

'My name comes from Norse mythology,' she added. 'Freyja is the Queen of the Valkyries.'

SHE'S A NATURAL
When asked how she got into drag, Fraya says she 'just fell into it.'

'I mean, I was practically almost always expected to 'dress up' to themed parties or for Halloween back home,' she said. 'However, I never saw myself as a legitimate drag queen back then.'

'But I continue doing it because& well, I'm a trained dancer who also studied theatrical arts in college,' explains Fraya. 'So when that route became too expensive I discovered that by being a drag entertainer I could still utilize my talents and feed my hunger for a stage.'

Fraya was at Lashes for a little over a year. 'I started perfuming there in May 2011 and became an official cast member that August,' she recalled. 'And to be honest, I can't say that I have one bad memory of R Place or Lashes. The staff is fabulous people with great personalities. So any time I spent there was badass.'

Currently, you can watch Fraya Love perform in 'Mimosas With Mama,' a weekly drag brunch featuring some of the hottest queens in town, at The Grill on Broadway (314 Broadway East) every Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Fraya Love says she has a few performers on the Hill she admires 'for countless reasons.' She names the cast of 'An Evening at Le Faux,' Mama Tits, Ben DeLaCreme, The Ladie Chablis, Jaime Von Stratton, and Kitty Kitty Bang Bang as some of her favorites.

Although the drag world has its internal politics just like every other community, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who does not have something nice to say about Fraya Love.

'I guess the secret is never giving less than the old college try,' she said. 'Everything else will fall into place.'

LISTEN TO YOUR ELDERS
If Fraya could go back in time and give her starter-queen self some advice, she says it would be to 'listen to any advice veteran queens have to give. They wouldn't give you advice if they didn't see any potential.'

At the end of the day, Fraya says she is 'just an extension of Louie,' her boy name.

'I tend to be as real as possible,' she admits. 'I'm a huge people person and a social butterfly. I love getting to know a person on a personal level. In fact, after a show you can usually catch me at the corner of the bar hanging out with friends, knocking back a few beers.'

'Yes, I said beer,' Fraya laughs.

'So if you ever catch me with an empty glass and I look thirsty,' she says with a smile, 'I will have either a Corona, Bud Light or a nice cold 7&7.'
