Will Washington vote for Marriage Equality?

Approve R-74 holds solid lead in late polls

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Washington is poised to embrace marriage equality on November 6 by Approving Referendum 74, according to the latest poll numbers.

Polls released November 1, only five days before the election, showed very little change from the last batch, released in mid-October. The prestigious Washington Poll still shows Referendum 74 leading by six points after adjusting the raw data for 'possible social bias,' the same margin as in the previous survey.

According to Washington Poll director Matt Barreto, respondents may be reluctant to tell pollsters their real feelings about LGBT rights if they believe their views might be perceived as socially undesirable. Consequently, Barreto adjusted the raw numbers on R-74 - which showed the measure winning among likely voters by 57.9% to 36.9% - to compensate for this potential bias.

A SurveyUSA poll released November 1 showed Approve R-74 ahead by nine points, 52% to 43%. This is also similar to previous SurveyUSA polling.

I-502 ALSO LEADING
Initiative 502, which would legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana in Washington, is ahead by about 18 points among likely voters in the Washington Poll and 19 points in the SurveyUSA poll.

The Washington Poll also shows Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee ahead of his Republican opponent by a narrow margin, 48.7% to 45.6% - almost exactly the same margin as in the October 18 poll. Inslee's lead is within the poll's margin of error, however.

SurveyUSA likewise shows the race for governor as a dead heat, with 47% for Inslee and 46% for Rob McKenna.

NO DRAMA FOR OBAMA
The Washington Poll shows President Obama trouncing his Republican opponent by 20 points, and Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell ahead of her challenger by an even more impressive 27.5 points.
