We're living in a DEVONATION

Acclaimed local designer debuts his spring collection Thursday

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On November 8, local artist and fashion designer Devon Yan-Berrong will debut his much-anticipated spring/summer 2013 couture collection, DEVONATION, at The Social (1715 E. Olive Way).

For this collection, his fifth in two years, Devon told SGN he was inspired by the trends and energy of the late 1960s.

'DEVONATION is based on my name,' he said. 'It is my inspiration, a vision, an idea, or a story. Just like a little fancy town, city, or little world I am building in my mind. So this is the name of my planet.'

Because this is a debut show, Devon tells SGN, 'We are not selling anything at the show but have the ability to take pre-orders.'

MULTIMEDIA EXHIBIT
Also on display at the event will be photos and video footage from a past collection, the Asian-inspired 'To Sacrifice Is to Love.'

Devon says he always knew he was going to be an artist.

'My grandma told me I was very easy to take care of,' he recalled. 'She would just give me a pencil and some paper and I'd draw all day.'

When he was 5, he debuted as an actor for his father, a classical opera performer in Hong Kong. 'After that I began to dream about becoming an artist just like my dad.'

A FRESH START
Originally from Hong Kong, Devon moved to the United States in December 2006 to follow his artistic vision. His journey also allowed him to leave behind some painful memories. When Devon was in a middle school, he was attacked and stabbed because he was perceived to be Gay. The attack and other personal turmoil caused him to attempt suicide twice.

With a newfound freedom and encouragement to evolve and fulfill his passions, Devon began to thrive as a watercolorist in Portland, Oregon, where he met his now-partner, Ric Saddi Devon Berrong-Yan.

'He supports me and believes in me and helped to give me a lot of confidence,' Devon told SGN.

In 2010, Devon produced his first fashion collection and held a sold-out fashion show. The response was overwhelming - requests began to come in for Devon to take part in fashion events, not only in Portland, but also in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver (B.C.), Chicago, and Seattle. He was even personally invited by the producers of Lifetime TV's Project Runway four times to be part of their show.

Devon was a nominee for the 2010 Portland Fashion Week Emerging Designer.

TAKING SEATTLE BY STORM
In 2011, Devon and Ric moved to Seattle to find a new audience and new inspirations for his fashions. Within a couple of months he was taking part in Metropolitan Fashion Week as an Emerging Designer nominee.

And now, Devon is set to debut his very own fashion line. 'Come to the show and witness the story of a little dreamer with big dreams,' he said. 'I had to go through a lot to get here... I hope the audience will get to see and feel what this dreamer sees and feels.'

DEVONATION takes place Thursday, November 8, at The Social. A VIP reception is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Doors for the main event open at 7, with the fashion show at 7:30, followed by a social networking party. This is a 21-and-older event, and admission is free.
