PNB presents new Mark Morris work in an ambitious showcase

by Milton W. Hamlin - SGN A&E Writer

ALL PREMIERE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET
Through November 11

Program includes:
Kammermusik No. 3
Sum Stravinsky
Lost in Light
Arms That Work

Pacific Northwest Ballet continues its 40th anniversary season with four world premieres in a single evening's program, simply titled All Premiere. While the recent Cinderella was a no-brainer for this scribe and granddaughter Miss V, these four new abstract works were initially not considered family fare. But then the Trio saw the incredibly detailed Seattle Times preview. 'Are we going?' came the phone calls and e-mails. 'It looks like aerobics and I take aerobics at school.' 'It looks so modern!' 'Can we have free cookies in the press room again?'

Well, after much planning, much e-mailing, and total cooperation from PNB's press and box office staff, the Trio, now reunited, marched in - and, as usual, conquered the world. Well, sort of.

Miss V #1 liked 'the man who jumped high' in one premiere. Miss A, as usual, 'liked it all.'

But she loved the fourth choice, Sum Stravinsky, with its classically inspired, blue-and-white ballroom elegance, best. 'I study ballet and want to dance like that,' she charmed after the show. Miss V #2 wanted 'more princesses,' but happily found them in two of the four works.

'Are you coming to the Nutcracker, girls?' one lovely pair of female friends (who go out of their way to make the Trio feel welcome in the adult world of the press room) asked. 'We already have it on our arts calendar for the busy holiday season,' the Trio replied in various phrasings. Right on.

MORRIS SCORES A HIT
From a reviewer's point of view, all four works exceeded expectations. The long-awaited Mark Morris piece, Kammermusik No. 3, was the evening's out-and-out high point and is sure to be incorporated into dozens of ballet company schedules within the next 18 months. (Morris, if you'll recall, was the tubby Gay kid from Renton who became the enfant terrible of the international ballet world.)

Kiyon Gaines' Sum Stravinsky, which closes the evening, is the only traditional 'tutu-and-tights' work on the program - and one of the most beautiful ballets ever staged by PNB. Its multi-toned costumes, incredible ballroom set, and on-target lighting made it an audience favorite from the moment the curtain went up.

The four-part program continues with evening and matinee performances through Sunday. Call PNB at (206) 441-2429 or visit www.pnb.org for details. The Trio 'discovered' the Teen Tix program (yay, team) and the gift shop ('There goes the limit on our Visa,' the coordinating/driving parent grinned as the three scooped up about $567,987 in 'necessary' souvenirs). Next up at PNB is The Nutcracker. The name alone sez it all.
