Transgender Day of Remembrance 2012

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On November 20, Washingtonians will observe the 14th annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). TDOR is a day to memorialize those whose lives were lost due to anti-Transgender fear, bigotry, and hatred. Around the world, communities plan vigils to remember those who have died in the previous year.

In recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance, GLSEN is asking students and faculty to work in their schools and GSAs to be more inclusive and supportive of Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth.

'Make sure that you are encouraging people to continue acknowledging and addressing the issues that Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth face, even after TDOR passes,' advised GLSEN of Washington State officials in an e-mail message to supporters.

HOW TO BE TRANS-FRIENDLY
Here are some things that you can do in your GSA, school, or community:

o Make a commitment to supporting the Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth in your school and community.

o Make your GSA Trans-inclusive. Download 'Jump-Start Guide Part 7: Where's the 'T' in GSA?' on the GLSEN national website (www.glsen.org). This guide will help students develop a greater understanding of Transgender people and related issues, as well as actions that can ensure that Transgender and gender non-conforming people are fully included in all that GSAs do in schools.

o Be an ally to Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth. The identities, experiences, and needs of Transgender and gender-nonconforming people are often overlooked in schools. GLSEN'S 'How to Be an Ally' guide provides some easy tips you can use to make sure that all students, including Transgender and gender-nonconforming students, are safe and respected in school.

CELEBRATE TRANS HEROES
This year, GLSEN is recognizing six notable Transgender people who have made great strides in achieving equality for all: Sylvia Rivera, Amanda Simpson, Kye Allums, Leslie Feinberg, Dr. Marisa Richmond, and Max Wolf Valerio. Read about them at www.glsen.org.
