Seattle Men's Chorus heats up the holidays

& by Milton W. Hamlin - SGN A&E Writer

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE
SEATTLE MEN'S CHORUS
Through December 22

The Seattle Men's Chorus opened the holiday season for 2012 with an incredible concert, titled Baby, It's Cold Outside, which literally heated up Emerald City music fans of all ages, all tastes, all backgrounds. Diversity ruled as the zillion members of the Chorus filed onto the stage. 'Lookin' good,' was a comment from the guys down the aisle. And they were right.

Next to this SGN scribe and his 'annual Chorus guest,' a well-dressed woman in a bright holiday sweater whispered to everyone within 13 feet, 'That's my boy!' as the men in snappy multicolored ties marched in. 'And that's his husband.'

Her husband might have shuddered a little at that public disclosure, but he was obviously beaming that his 'two sons' looked so great. And so obviously happy. ('They met at AA - they're just right for each other.')

This writer is notoriously mathematically challenged. So, dear reader, this is a 'You Do the Math' review.

Add up SGN's scores, compare with your own total, mail to SGN and win a free holiday prize, yet to be determined.

Title of concert: 10 out of 10

Decor, dress of Chorus men: 10/10

Well-chosen music for the season: 10/10

Musical preparation: 10/10

Each Chorus man wearing an AIDS ribbon: 12/10 (those boyz know how to dress - many wore two!)

Beauty of the serious music: 10/10

Enunciation of difficult Latin selections: 10/10

Charm of holiday selections: 10/10

Obligatory inclusion of music from Jewish and other holiday traditions (also known as 'Diversity Honors Diversity): 10/10

Energy of Chorus: 22/10

Infectious enthusiasm of Chorus: 14/10

Obvious delight of capacity matinee crowd: 15/10

Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse singing the show's title song for finale (glitz/glitter/'bling' factor included): 56/10 ('How does he walk in those heels?' 'Where does he get those 'diamonds'?' 'Hear he has a husband!' 'The SGN guy always raves about him &')

Charm, sincerity, talent of guest star Ana Gasteyer: 22/10

Difficulty of spelling her name correctly: 210/10

Said guest star's devastating send-up of Barbra S.'s simple idea of decorating - as in, 'Build an authentic mill house near your smaller swimming pool for a rustic feeling': 567/10

Extra points for SMC 'finding' a superstar singer/comedian/all-around Great Gal at Seattle budget price: 338/10

For more about Ana, visit www.sgn.org and read Miryam Gordon's delightful interview with the former SNL star. Ana brought her husband, their two children, and other family members to the show. The tiny tots loved it! At a reception/celebration afterward in the stylish Benaroya Hall Founder's Lounge, she happened to ask this SGN writer, 'What should I order tonight at Dahlia Lounge? I hear it's great.'

Sixteen Chorus men and guests spontaneously chimed together: 'Crab cakes and coconut pie!' In perfect harmony. Yes, it was that kind of a party.

Number of people who told Ana that Dahlia Lounge was 'the' local restaurant in Sleepless in Seattle 'in case you didn't know': 354, to be exact.

Score for tourist info: 354/10

Quality of food and beverage at reception: 22/10

Appropriateness of Chorus gift to loyal donors: 10/10 ('Tiny, red, sharp, tasteful - like your buddy's d**k.')

Memorable moment to always be remembered: The annual greeting of a former student to a former teacher: 'How are you ... and him?' 'He's now my husband, at least he will be on December XX.'

'How's your partner, the retired Stanford guy?' the younger one asked with 'that' knowing look. 'We're getting hitched in June, on his birthday.'

'Will your ex-wife and all the three know about this?'

'Well, they might notice ... they're hosting our reception at The Ruins.'

(Thanks, guys, for decades of friendship. And to M&M for support from 'the girls in English 9.')

About the concert:

Quality: 19/10

Fun of funny skits: 16/10

This year's sing-along: 12/10 ('Thank God - whoever she is,' the man behind me camped it up, 'we didn't have to jangle our silly keys for 'Jingle Bells' &')

'12 Days of Christmas' sing-along, stand-and-cheer sequence: 7/10 ('Those guys don't know how much it hurts to stand up 12 times in three minutes,' the man with the cane next to me grumbled, not unreasonably.)

About the auction:

Overall: 7/20 ('Just what I need - a hot tub for my tiny condo! Or another car to park in Belltown. Or free tickets to the Men's and Women's concerts - we already have four for every one.')

Sign-language artist: 14/10

Joy of Hawaiian-themed second act: 45/10

Happiness of crowd departing: 66/10

Obvious love of families, friends, lovers, ex-lovers, and future lovers in the lobby: 22/10

The list, like the Chorus, goes on and on. Until December 22, 2012. So, dear reader: You do the math.

One word of advice: Go. Ticket info at www.flyinghouse.org. As usual, tell 'em SGN sent ya.

Happy Holidays from MWH and SGN.
