Teresa Guajardo and Tina Roose

Teresa Guajardo and Tina Roose want to get married. It's been 14 years since they met at a PFLAG picnic, in the wonderfully supportive company of Parents, Friends, and Families of Lesbians and Gays. After 13 years together, they want to get legally married, legally committed as next of kin, in sickness and in health, partners for life.

Teresa is a mental health counselor, and Tina is a retired librarian. They are among the 15 lucky Thurston County couples who got marriage licenses at 12:01 a.m. December 6. Teresa and Tina have been trying to get married or partnered so many times they even created 'Magical Marriage Tour' T-shirts listing the times they tried to get hitched. They registered as domestic partners with the City of Olympia in 2000. In 2004 they married in Portland, outside on a sidewalk so their white standard poodle, Brooke, could join them. That marriage was later nullified by the state of Oregon. The same year they held a commitment ceremony with family and friends from around the country. In 2007 they became state-registered domestic partners. Now they are really going to get married - legally married. 'Never in my lifetime,' says Tina, 'did I think I'd ever be able to marry the woman I love.' Tina's brother Paul even wrote them a song, titled 'Never in My Lifetime.'

Tina and Teresa will finally marry December 15 in the Washington State Capitol Rotunda in Olympia. To share their joy and celebration in an inclusive and accessible way, they have invited other couples to join them. So far, more than 20 couples from at least five counties plan to marry with them, mostly in separate ceremonies. A few couples will share a marriage ceremony with other joyful couples. In addition, hundreds of community members will attend to witness and celebrate this historic event.

Why the Capitol? 'It's the people's house,' says Tina. 'The Capitol belongs to all of us. We reserved the Capitol last February, as soon as the governor signed the marriage equality bill. We had faith the voters of Washington would do the fair and right thing and endorse our civil rights. Then we could get legally married.'

'And,' says Teresa, 'the Capitol Rotunda, with its marble walls and floors, grand balconies, and lovely chandeliers, is spectacularly beautiful. In both of our careers and as community activists, we have always advocated for equal rights and access for all. We wanted to share this celebration and wonderful space.'

Teresa & Tina's wedding begins at 12:30. Other weddings will follow. The celebration includes a reception with fabulous bride-and-bride and groom-and-groom wedding cakes and potluck finger foods.
