Heart makes history - Legendary Seattle band inducted into rock's Hall of Fame

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

The Seattle rock band Heart earned its rightful place in music history when it was selected as a 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Led by the Wilson sisters, Ann and Nancy, Heart had a long string of hit singles during the 1970s and '80s, including 'Magic Man,' 'Barracuda,' 'Crazy on You,' 'Alone,' 'Never,' Straight On,' and 'Dreamboat Annie.' Ann Wilson also performed with the Seattle Men's Chorus years ago. The group had previously appeared on the Hall of Fame ballot, but was not formally voted into the elite club until last week with the official announcement made on December 11. The 2013 inductee class is a diverse one, ranging from late disco queen Donna Summer to movie theme giant Randy Newman to classic rock icons Rush. Another Seattle native, Quincy Jones, also made the cut. The induction ceremony is slated for April 18 at L.A.'s Nokia Theatre.

NEXT WEEK, MACKLEMORE
Macklemore is coming to Seattle Gay News. The rising hip-hop star and Jet City resident interviewed with me for next week's 'Best of Music 2012' issue. I chatted with Macklemore (real name: Ben Haggerty) just before his Omaha, Nebraska, concert and all kinds of topics came up, from cupcakes to underwear to getting hit on by men. He also, as is tradition with our year-end artist interviews, picked his favorite music of the past 12 months and revealed his plans for the upcoming holidays. He hadn't even started on his holiday shopping when we talked. 'Same Love,' a track from the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis album The Heist, became a huge Gay anthem this year as it celebrated same-sex couples. Oh, by the way, Macklemore also provided me with his reaction upon hearing the news that Referendum 74 had officially passed. Pick up SGN on December 21 for the details.

LOOK OUT, SEATTLE
Marilyn Manson is returning to the Emerald City. The shock rocker, who picked up a Grammy nomination a week ago for the song 'No Reflection,' is set to perform February 12 at The Showbox SoDo. He always gives an interesting performance with great theatrics and cool stage props, so I expect he'll sell out his Seattle concert easily. At press time, ticket information was unavailable.

YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE...
These concerts are now sold out: Pentatonix on December 19 (The Showbox Market), 2 Chainz on December 21 (The Showbox SoDo), Ellie Goulding on February 4 (The Showbox SoDo), Ben Folds Five on February 4 (The Showbox Market), and Soundgarden on February 7 and 8 (Paramount Theatre).

COMING SOON: SUZANNE VEGA
Finally, I'm pleased to announce an upcoming interview with Suzanne Vega. The Grammy-winning folk artist will open her mid-winter tour at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on February 5. Vega has interviewed with SGN once before, and we're looking forward to another opportunity to speak with this talented singer-songwriter (for the record, my fave Suzanne Vega song is 'Small Blue Thing').
