The year of Macklemore

Seattle's hip-hop sensation shows his Gay fans some love

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

What a year it's been for Macklemore! The Seattle hip-hop artist released his first full-length recording, The Heist (with his usual collaborator, Ryan Lewis), and it landed atop the iTunes albums chart and at No. 2 on Billboard's album chart in its first week. He sold out concerts throughout the country, including at WaMu Theater here in Seattle, the University of Oregon's McDonald Theatre, and an upcoming gig at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. Plus, the pro-Gay marriage single 'Same Love' earned him a guest spot on Ellen and over nine million views on YouTube. How's that for a guy who grew up eating Dick's burgers? After a well-earned holiday break, Macklemore will be back on the road and then working on a new album in 2013. Reached in Omaha, Nebraska, recently, the hometown rapper gifted himself to our 'Best of Music 2012' special issue. Merry Christmas to us!

Rodriguez: This has been a big year for you. When you look back, is there one or two things that stick out for you more than the others?

Macklemore: Getting our album sales back for the first week was a really cool highlight of 2012. We didn't expect to do anything close to the number that we did, so that was really exciting. There's been so many moments. It's really tough to narrow it down to one or two. But overall, just the reception of our album and to see what 'Same Love' did.

Rodriguez: When you found out the official results from Referendum 74, did you celebrate in any way?

Macklemore: Oh yeah, absolutely. I really wanted to be back in Seattle. We were in New Orleans and I don't think it was an official 'Yes, we won!' but we started celebrating a little early. I just reflected on the last three, four, five months of the song being out. Just to see the results really matched everyone's expectations and hopes that there was going to be change in Washington.

Rodriguez: What are your holiday plans? Are you going to stay put in Seattle, or go somewhere else?

Macklemore: I'm just planning on spending it with family and chilling out. It's been a really long tour and I can't wait to get home and go to Dick's and get a milkshake and a Deluxe and be with my family.

Rodriguez: Do you have your holiday shopping done?

Macklemore: No, I've been shopping for myself. I need to get into the holiday spirit and start buying for other people.

Rodriguez: What have you bought recently?

Macklemore: What haven't I bought recently? I've spent entirely too much money on shoes, I have bought really nice jackets, I've bought some gold - gold necklaces, a gold ring.

Rodriguez: Do you have any favorite albums or singles from this year?

Macklemore: Kendrick Lamar's got an incredible album that's my favorite of the year. It's called good kid, m.A.A.d city. It's just a phenomenal piece of work, front to back.

Rodriguez: Since you're so comfortable with Gay culture and the lifestyle, you must be comfortable with Gay men hitting on you.

Macklemore: I feel like Ryan Lewis gets hit on more by the Gay guys than I do. Maybe it will change when I get back to Seattle. But yeah, I'm comfortable with it. It's no different than a girl hitting on me. I'm in a committed relationship with my girlfriend, and my response is the same whether it's a guy or a girl.

Rodriguez: Are you a Top Pot Doughnut or Cupcake Royale kind of guy?

Macklemore: When I eat doughnuts I feel really horrible. Usually, it's the morning and it's the first thing that I've eaten and I end up regretting it. So I'm gonna have to go with Cupcake Royale just because I usually eat them after I've had some other food in my stomach. But they're both extremely good.

Rodriguez: Do you replenish the socks and underwear that get lost on tour?

Macklemore: This is the first tour I've abandoned underwear after performing the show, or mostly each show. I just sweat way too much to hold onto any sort of underwear and socks.

Rodriguez: What's happening in 2013 that you know about?

Macklemore: We're going to Australia and New Zealand. We celebrate the beginning of the year in Hawaii with a show. We have a ton of college shows lined up, and we're going to start working on our new album.

Rodriguez: Finally, as the year winds down and you get ready to celebrate the holidays, what would you like to say to your Gay fans here in Seattle?

Macklemore: You know, I appreciate the support on 'Same Love.' The community that I care the most about was the Gay community and making sure that I made a record that spoke from my experience. In a certain way, I was bringing up an issue that wasn't my own life. So I wanted to make sure that I did it in a tasteful way. I think the Gay community in Seattle really got behind the record and saw my true intentions with making the song. That's been amazing - it's been the greatest gift having that.
